Hello folks
I’m on the lookout for a a solar panel which is unregulated with a blue plug on the cable so it plugs directly into my Van so it will not be fixed to my van that’s one option but I would prefer to upgrade my solar panels to a greater power source and have them fixed to the van so currently I’m in Victoria looking for any recommendations before I head off to Darwin thanks Craig

Hi Craig
The no regulator idea is fine, just remove it and discard provided the panel output is within the limits acceptable to your charger.
What are you plugging it into on your van?
You will need to offer more information.
Cheers
Roy

Yes Roy the blue plug is on the chassis beside the battery box I’ve got a BM Pro battery management system installed

"with a blue plug on the cable so it plugs directly into my Van"

What is this "blue pug?" You don't need to purchase a panel with any particular plug on it. Get a panel without any plugs and get someone to put the required connector on it. If your best value panel has the wrong connector on it, just get it changed. There is no sense in attempting to get the required item when you can get a better value deal and change the connector.

The Blue plug is possibly a 50 amp Anderson, not a lot of information supplied. Michael

The "blue pug?" is a small Norwegian dog.

That is a big long sentence without much information. A 300 watt panel will be HEAVY and impractical. You need to make sure the charger, ie, like in a JAYCO, can accept the Open circuit voltage of the panel. MAKE sure so you don't fry the charger.
A blue plug is not needed but if you want it to be BLUE, simply write "BLUE" on the GREY PLUG fitted to the leads.

You also hinted in that sentence about increasing wattage of current van panels. But again that can be done, but TOTAL wattage and associated VOLTAGE produced must be below the charger input threshold, ie. total ability, or the charger will be damaged.

Maybe try explaining each objective in it's own sentence so people here can address it for you.

Yes, start a new sentence for every thought or topic, then we will know your intentions or questions.

Gday RMD
I have a blue plug on the chassis next to the battery box the grey plug is not compatible with the blue hence the need for a blue plug on the lead from the solar panel I have a battery management system installed and it’s my understanding that this will monitor all the power inputs Granted you could be right with a 300 watt panel being to big so I’ll consider that in my thinking cheers

Ok, if Blue isn't compatible with a Grey, then I would change the Blue one, Mark it SOLAR INPUT, but having a normal Grey plug will enable any solar panel of "suitable specs" to be connected to your system as an AUX power source. OR buy a Blue and a GREY plug and have them connected to a short thick cable. that way it allows either a Blue source or a Grey source vie the two PLUG LEAD. My Jayco has what you describe but it is GREY in a BLACK enclosure and runs directly to the SOLAR input of the charger in van.

It is VERY important to know the AUX SOLAR INPUT VALUE of OPEN CIRCUIT VOLTS and MAX AMPS/ Generated so charger is not fried. It is best if you, or someone with a Multimeter can measure the PANEL Open Circuit VOLTS, IN FULL GOOD SUN and also the DIRECT SHORT CIRCUIT CURRENT it produces. Volts X amps = WATTS and that should be not more than the CHARGERS ability.
Does the Blue plug wiring go to the charger?
You need to know exactly what you have, and if possible, it's connections to CHARGERS and BATTERIES so problems are not created.

He has a blue Anderson plug, which is designed to go only with another blue Anderson plug, so it can be used only for the intended use (in this case, solar) and not be accidentally used for any other purpose. You are recommending he change the existing blue plug (on the vehicle) for a grey plug so it suits a panel he purchases. If he has to change a plug, why not simply change the panel plug nd retain the safety factor (apart from the fact it would be easier)?

Note: not addressing the voltage/amperage requirements here...

I originally had all Grey Anderson plugs.

Then had the bright idea to change to a Red connector on the cables from the solar panels to the regulators.

Damn nuisance as the different leads I had to connect other bits and pieces to power then required an adaptor.

So changed all back to grey and it is much simpler to hook up whatever to whatever.

Works for me.

Jaycar sell a few different types of Solar Panels, some Auto. Elec. also sell Panels, and ARB stores sell them.
