Hello, I am looking to use a standard Ipad for explore oz mapping.
Can anyone recommend a quality Ipad mount that is up to to rigours of four wheel driving?
Vehicle will be 80 series landcruiser. I was wondering if there was a mount that clamped on to the grab handle on the dash? Thanks. Garry

I reckon that you could buy a mount that has a sturdy ipad mounting for the tablet itself and then manufacture a couple of mounts to fix to the grab handle. Using aluminum it should 'nt be hard to do.

Thanks Big Fish and Racey, Ram mounts seem to have a good range and I will be trying a thing called "tough claw" which should clamp on the grab handle. Cheers. Garry

I can second Industrial Evolution - we've got one in our Prado with a RAM mount to hold a 10" tablet. Absolutely rock solid. 10000x better than the RAM thing I bought which mounted to the seat bolts and wobbled like jelly.

yes, I have heard they are a good bit of kit. Pity they don't make them for Android :-(

Lyndon NT - I can't tell if you're serious or not.

The "in dash" mounts have a bracket that is compatible with a RAM tablet holder - it just bolts on.

Hi, after a lot of research, I have gone with one of these, expensive but very sturdy and seems to work well. I have set it up so the top of my tablet does obscure my vision. No association apart from buying one.

And the person that works there who I contacted by phone was very helpful.

I've got one too, but a slightly cheaper model. Works well.

Hi Duncanm,

This would appear to be a series of “RAM” mounts, so would “Seasucker” just be a reseller?

That's my impression. They sell the Seasucker mount and resell the associated RAM parts. You could probably get the components more cheaply if you were to buy them separately from other sources. It was convenient to me to buy the package.

Hi, most bits are Ram, but the suction bit for the windscreen is SeaSucker and that is the key bit in how well it holds to the inside of the screen. I did put a bit of the soft side of the Velcro onto my dash where the arm rest on the dash so it doesn’t squeak. Takes a bit to get it set up with the angles and position it to how I wanted it, but once done its great.

I have used ramx but their performance is quite inconsistent. Mounting them on the windscreen is problematic due to the fact that you need a very well made mount, that widescreens with excess curvature undo the bond, the bond becomes weak in wide temp variation like hightemps, that the suction cap needs to be periodically cleaned, that the distance is too far for its heavy size. Also high heat from sunlight can cause the li-ion battery to overheat due to the fact they are using very unrobust pouch cells instead of cylindricals, So i gave up on windscreen mounts.

I tried a hard mount that bolts to the left front seat post, but that requires a ad hoc stabilizer to the dash to prevent it shaken soo badly, secondly the seat post mounting is soo poorly engineered that the mount can easily work harden and fatigue. but that position is better, only caveat is your kinda need to tilt your head a bit to read it, mine is 7inch and that is about as large as you wanna go for weight considerations.

Long story short, mounting stuff in the car is very hard unless you got a solid mounting platform. ideally mounting it too the dash where air con vents are would be good.

I bought an eBay cheapie....around 20 bucks from memory. Bought a sticky pad and sat it direct onto dash. Works well for us and does not move.

If you are anyway inclined, you could make something similar to mine. Had it for years and have done over 200k on all types of roads and tracks. Frame held in place simply by Velcro. Velcro on the back of the tablet as well. Keeps it well away from airbags.
