Hand winches are great as they are far more practical (and cheaper) than a bullbar mounted winch. My friend has a hand winch and we have used it and I can guaruntee that your 4WDing will improve when you find out how much effort is involved LOL.

when we doing training it is usually towards the end of november - getting the students to bury a wheel then handwich out a troopy (2 car lengths) teaches a great lesson - look and get out before trying to blast through. if you have room they are a good investment - they are heavy but a definitely good. hint - store the cable inside a tyre - wheelbarrow type. rgds
Slow down and relax......

Tim,

I popped into Brawn today in my travels. Colin, from Brawn, showed me the 5000 lb Porta Winch which sells for $990 with the full kit of tow bar connector, tree protector, 24 m of cable, hand control, kit bag, etc. He reckons it is more than capable of dragging a Jerry Can up a slope. If you bog it to the axles you would need a snatch block to get enough leverage.

The 5000 isn't real fast but is about half the weight and price of the 8000 lb. For our needs i reckon it would be fine. Sounds like a much better proposition than a hand winch at $500.

Jim.
