T-Tours

I'm looking at this app for off-line use, I do not own a ipad/tablet. I wanted to put it on our laptop so it's easier for both of us to see/use. I am struggling to understand how it is different, but it sounds as if it can only be used while hooked up to wifi?
Am I better off just buying a tablet?

Once you download the maps, it can be used off-line (no mobile coverage) on Android or IOS phones or devices.
I use it off line on my Samsung S22 phone, the larger screen of a tablet is much better.
Others who use it more heavily can contrast the off V on line features.

If you wish to use a Windows device to actively use the Traveller app for your navigation and mapping whilst travelling (including the use of active location tracking and use of offline maps), then you can still purchase the Windows version of the app from the Microsoft Store BUT be aware that the current version will be the last update available to Windows users. Also be aware that windows laptops do not come with built in GPS receivers so you'll need to use an external GPS receiver - AND to setup the GPS you'll also need to download and configure location sensor software (all detailed in the documentation). Honestly - its all just not worth it - get yourself a tablet or iPad. Please refer to the notes in the System Requirements panel on the ExplorOz Traveller webpage for specifics.

Note: whilst the app will soon be withdrawn from sale in the Microsoft Store, we already have a web version accessible to use on your laptop - this requires internet connectivity as it is accessed via this website and doesn't offer offline maps, doesn't offer location tracking - is not designed for portable use - but for planning purposes. To use the webapp - you'll need to sign in to the website using an account that has a Membership licence - then tap on the Account button at the top right - then select "Traveller Control Panel" - here you'll see the button to Open Web App.

Thanks for the reply. Looks like I will go the tablet option. Is there a certain standard the tablets have to be to sufficiently run the app? As is do the basic (cheap) Android tablets keep up with app? (I'm not a tech guru at all)

As outlined in our System Requirements, the minimum specifications are based on operating system versions. This is because your device’s OS version determines whether the app can be found and installed from the app store.

We’ve kept the requirements quite low — Android 8 and iOS 14 — to ensure broad compatibility. However, please note that older devices running these versions may not offer optimal performance, and we do not recommend relying on outdated hardware.

For the best experience, we suggest using a high-performing device, although the choice ultimately depends on your budget.

Ask other app users for their personal recommendations if you like - theres lots of this chat shared on the ExplorOz Traveller Facebook User Group.

As outlined by David and Michelle, it's definitely worth having a good read of the system requirements. All phones will have a GPS but wi-fi only iPads do not and require an external GPS receiver. Again covered in the system requirements and associated documentation. All but the very cheapest wi-fi only Android tablets have an in-built GPS. David and Michelle nowadays have through experience, expressed a preference for Apple hardware. I've always had a philosophical resistance to Apple's business model and inflated prices and have perhaps stubbornly stuck with Android and Windows. (Back in my workdays a lot of the geochemical modelling software I used only ran on Windows and much of the laboratory instrument control software moved to Windows with the advent of Windows NT.)
I find that I don't really need to bring my expensive ultrabook on trips any more and use my tablet. Fitted with an SD card reader, a large internal microSD and an external hard drive with charge through, it's a powerful device. If you use your pc for things like photoediting, the mobile version of Adobe software is fantastic.

WIFI & internet connection is not necessary while using the app OFFLINE , But needed to set up the ACCOUNT & app .
Phone or tablets are easier as they have inbuilt GPS .
You will benefit by looking at the tutorials on youtube / explorOz channel .
Do your research BeforeHand ! , I find the app to be excellent but might not suit everyone.
