Do any owners of the 80 series know what the maximum towing capacity is? We have a November '97 turbo disel model, I've looked in the glovebox owners manual and it says contact Toyota. The tow bar is rated for 3500kg but I've seen 2500kg and 3500kg figures in caravan producers materials so I'm now confused. Thanks guys.

Same as all Nissans Nige

Max towing capacity = All weights of bogged/broken down toyotas

Hi Nige,
Until recently I had a Sept 96 DX Cruiser onto which I fitted a H/Reece HD towbar. The towbar was rated to 2500kg capacity with only 125kg ball weight. I then found out that Toyota had re-rated the 80 series to 250kg ball weight so I spoke to Hayman Reece who then supplied me with the appropriate re-rated max capacity plate for the towbar.
I also recall hearing that all 80 series manufactured after Sept 96 (I believe they were beefed up around this time) should be rated at 3500kg & 350kg ball weight to match the 100 series.
I think if you call Hayman Reece they should be able to confirm this.

Goes by law in each state.
Victoria is 1.5 times the vehicle weight with appropriate breaking system.

Actually, I believe the states now have uniform laws. The manufacturer rated maximum for each model is the legal maximum, but if towing weights are not specified then its 1.5 times tare weight (plus brakes over 750kg).

I believe it is 1.5 times GVM with braked trailer OR max rated weight on the towbar which ever is less. Some manufacturers state 4000kg for the max load (Disco)
