Docker River

Wondering if fuel is available at Docker River on the Great Central Road.

Thanks.

Yes it is, but like many remote areas there can be gaps in supply, so best to call them when heading that way to check the pumps are working & they are not waiting on a delivery. Ph. 0401 201 737

Do not plan on using it, the community do not welcome tourists and the provision of fuel is not intended for tourists and entry to the community is not permitted except in extreme emergency. We know first hand and was told in no uncertain terms by the local police sho act on behalf of the community to keep the “rubber neckers” (his quote) out. At the time we were researching availability of store access for tourists and was told we werent welcome and to get back in the car and on your way. This is the only community along GCR that discourages visitors - all the others are welcoming.

Back in 2017, we stopped at Docker River for fuel, and were definitely not discouraged by the store owner regarding not stopping for fuel. We had been advised that it was not a place for “tourists”, but that if we needed fuel, it was OK to call in. We did, and found the store owner polite and helpful. There was a sign on the pump saying no fuel until 3 days time, when we asked inside, the owner stated that sign was to discourage the locals, and not aimed at people passing through that needed fuel, and that we could fill up as needed. I have a long range tank, and did not need fuel my self, but my Brother-in-law and my son both needed a top up to reach Yulara. I know that is 8 years ago and things can and do change.

I have had a similar response when I stopped for fuel at Yuendumu on the Tanami in 2022. Very welcoming by the store owner, he asked if there was anything else that I needed besides fuel, he even advised me where to go to “air up” after getting off the gravel.

Whilst I would not normally enter a community unless I had to, particularly one that I have been advised not to enter, when I have done, I have found them quite polite.

@ ExplorOz - David & Michelle - do you have a date associated with your interaction?

Cheers
Greg

Hi Greg, this occurred in the 2023 season but I try to think I keep up to date and alert to changes and Ive not heard its changed but I know that every season its possible for such attitudes to suddenly change - but history is a good indicator of the future and with DR theres over 20 years of this non welcoming attitude to tourists entering the community - they need the store and fuel for themselves so the priority is to keep it under some sort of manageable control - they are happy for you to stay at the free camp outside the community though.

I'm currently on the GCR at Giles Breakaway, travelling E to W. Didn't consider stopping at Docker River. It's only about 100km from DR to Warakurna, which has fuel. We fueled up at Curtin Springs, Warakurna, Warburton, and Tjukayirla. No problems getting fuel at any of these, but note that Tjukayirla is cash only. Given that, can't see the need to stop at DR.

This from the Docker River Store Facebook Page in June this year. Note the mention of tourists.

What police & SOME members of the community might want could be totally different to Storekeeper & others want it would think .

I've never had a problem there, though haven't been for a while - entitled pricks will always get the finger, no matter where you go. Be nice and not arrogant, will get you far.

Looking for adventure.

Considering the “Store” is owned and run by the Community, along with the Art Gallery, it would appear that there isn’t an issue with purchasing fuel etc. and also purchasing art and artefacts from the gallery as well. This is how we found the situation to be back in 2017. Having said that, I would also be sensible with regard to keeping valuables out of site and locking your vehicle, even when actually fuelling up and going in to pay.

Exactly as you have to do in our capital cities. In addition, you are breaking the law if you step away from your vehicle more than three metres and leave it unsecured, in most Australian states.

Lock your car. The same thing that the Communities do to their bowsers.
