Anecdotes on ExplorOz Traveller

Hi everyone,
I am giving a presentation next month at the Land Rover club of Vic (LROCV) and I'm looking for some interesting anecdotes for my presentation.
I've heard one story about an angry hema customer who downloaded ExplorOz Traveller via Starlink on the Canning Stock Route, so that he could properly run a navigation package.
I'm not targeting any specific competitor, I just want to offer shared experiences.
Thanks
Phillip Simpson

Leaving Wave Rock our ExplorOz indicated a left turn, which we did, and got on to the road we wanted.
Our friend in another car had Hema , which directed her to turn right , which she did.
Twenty minutes later she showed up where we were waiting.
She had completed a complete circle of streets and several kilometres to get about 200 metres, totally unnecessarily.
Her navigation system did this often.
ExplorOz Traveller has never once let us down.

Cheers
Jim

First of all, what HEMA unit was she using before you go knocking HEMA.?

There are the older HN series, that are very old and then there was the first of the HX series 9 years ago and 2 other upgrades since then.

We must talk apples with apples when talking about street navigation to be fair.

@Jim S1 . Which Hema model are you refering to ? Did you ever consider it may be a user settings error in the "Calculate Route Options" as there is usually up to 4 different algorithms, model dependent. Each can direct you on a different route.

Hi VIC

Can you please supply more accurate details as the HEMA and ExplorOz systems are very different and not possible to use both systems on the same mapping system.

Phillip was only sharing that story as an example. He’s not looking to debate the details of it here, but rather to invite others to contribute their own experiences for his presentation.

Phillip puts a lot of time into helping people – answering questions, assisting with headunit setups, and sharing his knowledge. He’s also active at 4WD shows and is well regarded in the industry. His intention here is simply to gather stories from others, not to get drawn into side discussions.

For context, he had originally asked me if I could provide him with some stories, but I suggested it would be better to ask people directly via the Forum and FB group.

PS: Just to add – this season alone I personally took more than half a dozen calls from travellers on the CSR who had decided mid-trip to switch their navigation software and downloaded ExplorOz Traveller right there on the track!

They were calling on mobile phones via Starlink after the download to ask questions. A couple might have even been pre-purchase – I can’t recall the exact details as I don’t keep individual call records.

The point is, it really struck us as a sign of the times. Travellers are now so well equipped with Starlink that even in the most remote part of Australia they can not only make calls, but actually download, install, and set up an entire mapping and navigation system on the spot. That’s pretty incredible to witness – and we were genuinely thrilled to be able to help people through a tricky moment.

Michael, I may have misunderstood your intentions, or maybe you've misunderstood Phillip, but just to clarify – we don’t impose strict rules around the subject matter of posts, and we certainly don’t moderate based on what might be considered a “better quality” post.

In this case, Phillip’s request is quite normal. He’s a strong advocate for ExplorOz and a power-user of the Traveller app, but also OziExplorer and other nav systems, is involved in SOTA and is very thoughtful in getting facts and sharing facts. He spends a lot of time helping others – answering questions, assisting with headunit setups, and sharing his knowledge. He’s also active at 4WD shows and well regarded in the industry. In short, he’s one of the good guys, and we value the contribution he makes here.

I agree QC, everyone is getting so touchy these days. Even the proprietors.
Is it the status of world events? Or are we all getting old and crabby?
It all started with the death of Friday Funnies and the need to submit to Google's dictates.

Allan, let’s keep the focus on the topic at hand rather than side comments – it makes the discussion far more useful for everyone reading. These days, that should be everyone's priority.

Back to the OP's question - calling for input from those with actual anecdotal stories about using the ExplorOz Traveller app.

I opened this thread expecting to read some amusing anecdotes about things that went "pear-shaped" while traveling around Oz. When I see "ExplorOz" I still don't automatically think of the mapping software, lol.

Candace, I'm no navigation guru but it is a bloody good APP!! I don't know anything else that offers what the Traveller does ?? Who knows how long you could wait for some support tecs to get back to you... unlike explorOz I'll get response same day .

Yeah it was a bit disappointing that there wasn't more funnys' Bring back Friday funnies ;)))

Hi everyone. Thanks for your contributions and humorous remarks. Didn't get exactly what I was after, but good to see that we are happy with our ExplorOz experience. Not a single negative anecdote about ExplorOz. Perhaps that in itself if the anecdote I needed.

Cheers

Stephen: it would appears you haven't grasped what this Topic post is about ??
For God's sake read what the op is asking for and try and stay ON TOPIC . It is not about Hema or Traveler app
He is asking for Anecdotes i.e funny stories to share with his Club .

I have story from my current motorcycle trip.

I was staying in a motel room in Daly Waters. It had been in the the high 30’s for a couple of days . I got up ( still pitch black outside) and decided to have a look outside to feel the temperature ! The door had a closer on it, and of course I heard it shut , sure enough it was locked!
So 5.30am outside my room ! I am so lucky I had put jocks and a T shirt on!
OMG so glad I wasn’t naked!!!
I had to wait around until a bit after 6 when I saw some staff start to arrive at the pub to get another key.

Probably not the sort of story you want either, but I do use ExplorOz traveller

Here’s a recent story I received via the Help Desk:

"I've had Topo for a few years, and the more I use it, the more I appreciate the information it provides. I haven't used it for turn-by-turn directions or treks, but the more I explore, the more I learn. I recently took a 5-hour scenic tourist flight from near Wilpena Pound to the top of Lake Eyre, flying at heights varying from 1,000 to 5,000 ft. You’d look out the window, wonder what you were seeing, zoom in on unexplored areas, and there was a wealth of information about the land features. The pilot I was sitting next to was very impressed — he had his own pilot app running, but it told him very little about what was below us."

This reminds me of a phone call I once had with a commercial Qantas pilot. He told me that the ground data in his inflight map was also quite limited. He used ExplorOz Traveller on his iPad in the cockpit to identify lakes, dams, and other features he was flying over, which he would then relay to passengers over the public address system. He was really excited about it and even had a business plan to promote the app across the entire Qantas fleet. He tried to connect me with a scheme for that, but we never heard back and I didn’t follow up.

It’s a great example of how people find their own ways to use the app. There are so many possibilities beyond what we initially designed for — and it’s definitely not just for CarPlay headunits, as some people seem to think!
