This was a thoroughly enjoyable watch, a family travelling up the
Birdsville Track in 1965

The channel itself has lots of other gems:

Good video Duncan. Not much track change over the years from that 1965 film.
A significantly visible change however is the
Birdsville Pub which was reconstructed in 1975 after being destroyed yet again by fire. It has undergone quite a few refurbishments over the years.

These old films are an absolute treasure. I travelled through these
places back in the late 80s in an old Valiant ute—not that long ago, but I still remember both the harshness and the beauty of the country out there. I’m hoping to revisit in the near future. Thanks for sharing such great history that deserves to be preserved.

They had a 4WD!
Crikey. That set them
well apart.
Margaret and I drove a Mini 850 from
Adelaide to
Darwin and back in 1967.
And in
Easter 1970 we drove a Mini to
Coward Springs on the
Oodnadatta Track and then turned west to Billa Kalina Station, following the southern side of the Margaret River. There was no track for most of that. We were 3 people in a single vehicle.

Coward Springs with the Ghan going past, Easter 1970.
Like the family in the video, we asked permission from the local Policeman at
Marree. He did not want to let us go, but his dollybird wife draped herself over his desk and pleaded with him because she had never seen that bit of the country and wanted to come out and find us. Eventually he agreed and we had to send a message to
Kingoonya Police when we got through. The Maree policeman would come and look for us if he had not heard within 4 days.
We got through OK.
Young and stupid?
Exactly 25 years later, the same 3 of us tried to repeat this trip in reverse in a 4WD. We failed.
Cheers,
Peter
