Burra Rock to Cave Hill – South of Coolgardie.

Hi there. I have put some directional signs up near the above track to 3 different locations. I also marked out the access tracks with flagging tape to help people with guidance along the tracks. They should last 6 months or so before they fade and eventually deteriorate. These tracks I should say are not really tracks as such, but the route that I have taken many times to the locations. It is a lot easier to visit now than the first time that I visited the locations.

B10 and Small Woodline Dams.

This location has a cairn built by Richard Brazier in 1893 on his traverse with Aubrey Newman from Coolgardie to Esperance. The original cairn had a post marked B10, however the top of the post has now deteriorated, and although the cairn remains now complete, the original post is still contained within it (without the inscription on top).

When I originally arrived at the site I was surprised, as not only was the cairn there, but some small Woodline dams built in 1932, according to an inscription in mortar at the site.

There is now a track leading from the main Woodline Track all the way to the granite outcrop that has the cairn and the dams (3 km). I have deliberately placed the carpark at the end of the track, with an area of thick vegetation approximately 30 metres between it and the rock – so that access must be made by walking, to discourage driving on the rock.

Small Woodline Dam.

This location had an old existing track into it from the Cave Hill North Road from the south, however that track is a bit of a maze, and you would need to know specifically where you are going to find the dam.

There is now a track (2 km) leading from the main Woodline Track all the way east to the dam, which according to an inscription in the mortar was built in a similar time period as the B10 dams.

If you choose to visit please try and avoid driving on the rock to avoid damage to it.

N5 Newman Cairn

This location is a cairn built on a granite in 1893 by Aubrey Newman. The original cairn had a post inscribed N5 by Newman, and the inscription is still visible after all these years. This is the Newman which the township in the Pilbara is named after.

The cairn is near the intersection of the Woodline Track and the Cave Hill North Road. Technically, as it is accessible from the Cave Hill North Road, it strictly speaking is more connected to that road, however it is so close (approximately 200m) to the Woodline Track, I consider it relevant to both tracks/roads.

As the cairn is only approximately 200m from the road, it is only a short drive in on the track.

N5 Cairn -31.60776 121.30674
Start of short Track (from Cave Hill North Road) -31.6094 121.30635

I have put the locations and the start of the access tracks into the places database.

Cheers
Alan
