Gearbox is VERY VERY VERY (VERY) HEAVY...

Unless you have a lift kit, or a lot of clearance under the car, as in 35in tires, get it done.

we have done a mates TD42 and nutha mate of his RB30. GQ was insanely heavy, and RB was really a bitch to get back in... Just the angles, and clearance issues.

You can do it, but for the hassles, lost fingers, knuckles, and bleeding, I would pay

YMMV

i cheated when i done mine i pulled out the motor heaps easier that way.
also when you order the clutch kit make sure you get the month of the gq.
im not sure of the dates but there is a slight difference in the clutch plate.

Don,
People have been very badly injured removing and replacing gearboxes in GQ's as mentioned they are very heavy. I like someone else took the easy option and lifted the motor out, mine was a 1992 4.2 ST TD. It might seem a tad over the top but I found it a lot easier and also a lot safer. You could hire an engine hoist if you don't have one they're relatively cheap when you consider the cosequences. If you want to replace the gearbox front seal this can also be done with the engine out and you standing in the engines space. Good luck.
Keep the shiny side up

Be careful, one of the retaining bolts for a wiring harness that attaches to the gearbox is also the retaining bolt for a ball bearing used on an indent in the gear shift ( I think). The mate/mechanic that did mine found out the hard way. When undone it allows the ball to fall into the gearbox.

G'day,

AS above, they (gearbox, tfr case) are very heavy, and difficult to handle (you NEED ANOTHER JOINT BETWEEN ELBOW AND WRIST!), so I had mine done by dealer 18 months ago, only about $450, well worth it, also spend the extra and upgrade to "extreme" clutch kit....well worth it.

If you have to do it yourself, get a few mates around and a lifter....
