Anne Beadell highway

Hey, has anyone done the Anne Beadell highway in the last couple of years? What is it like?
I'm thinking of wandering up that way while travelling west.

It is a great drive, do not rush it, lots of history out there and do as much research as you can and allow a minimum of 10 days or longer

Thanks, when were you there? We are taking a silverado 2500HD towing a Masterpiece Optimum offroad van.

A few years ago now, but the track does not change much

You will want to use paint on body protector on your car and van there are lots of scratchy tight sections

Carry extra fuel, the only place to get fuel is Ilkutlka and most likely you will have a high consumption as your speeds will be between 20-40 kph

Spend time Emu lots to explore there and if you can the detour to Dingo Claypan is a great drive and visit the original 300 Mile marker and also the small detour to the actual Voakes Hill and explore around Serpantine Lakes

Couple of great Aboriginal sites in that area as well

We have driven some of it every year most recent years.
We drove east from Emu to Coober Pedy. That section was fully graded in February '26.
From Emu to almost the WA border, your car and van will get lots of significant pin stripes. It is tight and corrugated.
From a few km west of the border it was graded in 2025 and will be no problem. That year we drove from WA to Voakes Hill Corner.

Cheers,
Peter

Ahh Peter, thanks for bringing memories of the ABH to me. Great trek.
First time I drove it and not far in from Coober Pedy I was astonished to see a 40 passenger bus approaching me. And a second one following him. Surely, I thought, they could not have travelled across the ABH. Nah, certainly not. A little further on I found the Ghan train stopped on its track while the busses took passengers from it to Coober Pedy for a short visit.

Ngardanginy, why do you ask about people driving the track recently? It has not changed in its 70 odd years since Lenny forged it. Occasionally, and that's very rarely, a grader will skim over some section of it but for the most part it's pretty much as Lenny left it, complete with its corrugations. But it's still a great trek and very worth doing. You haven't really explored Australia if you haven't done the Anne Beadell. If you can't do the full length then just the eastern section from Coober Pedy to Emu could be of interest to you. But you need permits and they do frequently get enforced.
Cheers
Allan

Actually Allan, it has changed quite significantly in the last 2 years.
The western end was properly graded to within about 100km of the border in 2025. We drove that section days after the grader. It is 2 vehicles wide.
The eastern end (Coober Pedy to Emu) was graded seriously (with the assistance of a bulldozer) in February this year (2026). They bypassed wet sections and the seriously overgrown sections. We drove that in August this year.
I have pics and video of both sections if anyone wants to see then, but they are "just roads" for those sections now.
Still a great drive, and the bit in the middle is still like it has been for decades.
Cheers,
Peter

I would consider those gradings as maintenance rather than significant change. The track is restored to. much as Lenny left it. The ABH then progressively returns to its normal worn corrugated state.
But consider it as you will.
