Hi,

I have been given a Racor 220/225R filter and housing it's a 10 micron filter. It has a water trap in the bottom a lot like the CAV filters. Has anyone experience in this field, I've always only used geniune filters in petrol vehicles. Why would I use this one instead of just sticking with the geniune filter?? I don't think I can fit this in the line as well as the genuine one, I recall hearing that the patrol pump will only handle one filter.

Any comments appreciated.

Austravel,
I would suggest you price the disposable element for the Racor in order to decide whether to use it or not.
I use a CAV unit in place of the Nissan one. Reasons? Filters are only about $8- instead of $50- and also I can see the fuel in the glass bowl. Note i do carry a spare bowl in case of breakage. Only down side is that you can't fit the electrical plug which (on the Nissan standard unit) has a water sensor and lights up a dashboard indicator if there is water in the filter. However, I find this system works really well and I'm sticking with it. If you can get the Racor elements nice n cheap, why not give it a go.
I know that Gerk (member) has 2 filters on his 3L patrol.

Racor filters a very very good and well priced. IMO I reckon they are in the premium category. Used to use banks of them on Diesel gensets running 24/7 and we were able to extend the manufacturers engine mounted filter for around 2000 hours. I think you can get 2,20 and 30 micron elements as well. Sold through Parker (i think) a leading industrial hydraulic component manufacturer.

Austravel,

Some years ago now I bought a 2nd hand GQ that came with a Racor filter system fited. My good mate who is a very experienced diesel mech mostly earthmoving gear with some marine and truck experience as well spotted the Racor and questioned it.

When I checked with NIssan the filter spec is 5 micron. 10 really is pretty course. If you want to go to a cheaper setup for replacement filters I'd go the Lucas. I think the cartridge is a 226. The Lucas set up should cost about $100.00 and replacement cartriges are $5 to $10. They are also readily available all over Oz. Even here you need to be careful as there are a number of makers producing cartriges to fit these and some are 10micron or higher.

In short only buy replacement filters that specify 5micron. If it is higher or not specified then I won't fit them.

Racor have 2 , 10 and 30 micron elements.

In the top loading element type of fues filter they are colour coded to discriminate micron size. In the spin on range add a "s", " T"' or "P" to the part number for 2 , 10 or 30 micron. easy

I'm with Roachie, check the price of replacement filters. I saw an ad for Racor and investigated. It is similar to the CAV unit Roachie has but also lets you fit the water sensor just like genuine. BEAUTY I thought, I'll have one of them. Then I was quoted $55 for a replacement cartridge, I only pay $35 for one that fits on the genuine set-up. Bugger I thought, back to the drawing board!!!!

I had one of these fitted in a previous troopy for 10 years.
It was in addition to the normal Toyota filter mounted on the end of the manifold, the racor was fitted between the lift pump and the tank(s).

I removed the original Toyota water trap and wired in the water alarm to the Racor bowl. Used mostly 2 micron filters, some 10's.

Water will not pass through a genuine Racor filter, so if there is enough your progress just stops.

I never had any problems during the 10 years of use other than having to replace the kit in the filters lift pump.

I also did not pay for any elements in that time!

Regards
Jim
