You see lot's of places advertising kits but it might be worth your while just buying the things you need individually unless you can find a good quality kit that has only the things you need/want for less.

I have-

Snatch strap - Autobarn
shackles - ARB
Tree protector - Autobarn (I think?)
Winch - TJM

Never had a problem with any of it. Snatch strap has been used plenty of times and never had a problem with it. No fraying or damage of any kind.

Have fun.

Not much help but one of the 4x4 mags did a review of snatch straps a little while ago & the 'findings' were discussed here ... do a search here.

For my money, if you buy ARB stuff you buy as good as there is.

Hi Sam
Give Brawn a go.
They have a spread in one of the 2 main 4WD mags with contact details.
If that doesn't work give me a ring on Monday on 47322948 in Penrith as I am a brawn dealer and can put a kit together for you or make up a custom individual kit to suit your needs.

Cheers
Sam
P.S. You can get my details at www.lonards-automotives.com.au

Hi Sam,
I agree with all the above. Just work out what is best to suit your needs, but buy quality! And buy RATED stuff, rated shackles, straps etc..... rated in excess of what you may need!

Something that never seems to be mentioned is that snatch straps come in a plastic bag that invariably gets tossed under your seat until you need it, which is usually when you discover that condensation in the plastic bag has almost destroyed the strap. Take it out of the plastic and put it in another bag, something that will "breathe" and not bugger it.

My g/f bought me a Black Rat kit. Snatch strap, two rated shackles and a pair of gloves. It came in a decent bag, I added a receiver hitch recovery hook, some pliers and extra shackles.

Hi Sam,

I have the following:

ARB recovery bag
ARB snatch strap
ARB towing strap
ARB 4 x 4T shackles
ARB Bullbag (which I've only used once and was so so glad I had it!)
Riggers leather gloves
ARB Jump leads
6mm aluminium chequerplate jacking plate (which I got my local aluminium supplier to make from 300 x 300 mm x 6 mm plate)

Simple but effective. I'm a bit addicted to ARB but it's all good stuff. Other stuff is equally as good I've heard.

As per above reply, Australian 4WD magazine did a snatch strap comparo and some straps came out a bit better than others.

One thing I would like is a tow bar recovery hitch (from ARB of course!).

I'm a bit undecided about a hand winch...

High-lift jack is no good as you need somewhere to put it (jacking holes front and rear) plus somewhere to carry - plus they are heavy and dangerous.

Hope this helps.

Mike

4wd monthly sept 2003 no.57 was the issue and sorry to say ARB snatches didn't fair too well in fact they got a "not recommended" from the tests.
I have the mag here in front of me and i couldn't believe it either at the time... ARB make krap???? never!!!!
bushranger got runnerup honours.

out of 16 snatch straps tested
the kaymar 8000kg won
bushranger 8000kg runnerup
4wd megastores 8000kg got a highly recommended
the rest were graded as recommended or not recommended

the two ARB entries (8000kg and 11000kg) were both "not recommended" along with the 4wd megastores 9500kg, the repco motogard 7500 and the supercheap 9000kg.

sometimes the name brands can let you down the only way to know is find actual results from articles like these. its been nearly a year since these tests so maybe things have improved maybe 4wd monthly should re-run the tests and publish the results again. :)
