Now that Jan and I have been back two days so here's a quick note on the highlights of our trip to Lawn Hill and back to Melbourne. We met friends who were comng from Brisbane at Hungerford and camped in the Cullyamurra NP before heading to Innamincka and Coongie Lakes. The lakes were just wonderful and again we got some great sunset pics. While in Innamincka we met three other Ultimates and so have a shot of 5 lined up outside the trading post. There's a few of them around now. It was then on to Birdsville and a couple of nights with Ruth. It was great to meet Ruth after chatting for the last few months. She did find a spare sticker so we now have one on the rear of the car. We then spent a night on Wirrilyerna Station near Boulia before hading up to Mt Isa then to the Gregory River. It seems that this camping area is to be closed by the Shire due to polution by campers. This may be the last year it is open. WE spent four nights at Adels Grove and loved the walks and canoeing at Lawn Hill. The highlight of the trip though was the three nights we spent at Kingfisher Camp on Bowthorn Station. This is a must if anyone is in the area. Marvellous birdlife and a lovely camp site. We came home along the Kidman Way and found great river camp sites all the way. Now to start plannig next years trip...

Stayed at Lawn Hill NP about 2 weeks ago...reckon they should call it "No Lawn Hill"...:-))

Visted Adels and was very impressed...looked nice and cool under all that tree top canopy....also saw perhaps the largest collection of solar panels in use have ever seen....looking at getting one next week actually :-)

HI KiwiAngler

In answer to your question honestly, yes it is not as nice as it used to be.

Lawn Hill was very green once and far nicer than Adel's Grove.

It is now in the hands of the "Traditional Owners" who may not tend to the grounds with the same passion as in the past.

The cranky Ranger (as we called him) who used to manage Lawn Hill up until a number of years ago would make you shift your tent over (we didn't mind doing this) every 3 days onto another part of your campsite so he could water the site where your tent was to keep the grass green.

They have continued to upgrade Adel's very nicely and we now choose to stay at there whenever we visit the area and travel into Lawn Hill.

I was speaking to a ranger at Lawn Hill and she was saying it was more the fact that the previous ranger had been putting too much fertiliser onto the grass to encourage it to grow that the run-off had been going into the river and causing problems there. So they had stopped all watering/fertilising. I did note however they still ask you to move your tent every 3 days as you report but no one did as it would have just meant moving from one dust bowl to another.
Adel would be my choice next time too.

I think you will find Lawn Hill is still a good camp site

Many years ago before it was National Park there was no grass to camp on> it was a bit dusty But still nice.

National parks took over and the grass they imported was a non native indian grass that could sustain high lime content "Water from Lawhill creek) I suppose it is then a question of whether you want imported plants invading NP's.

Hello and welcome home. Good to read your trip report - very sad about Gregory River - very popular place. Heard about Kingfisher Camp and how beautiful it is.
Busy as here - weather lovely. had our first dust storm last thursday - horrid, just as the painters were finishing the house. The back door has a nice sand finish.
Jan, thank you, thank you, thank you and thank you again. Beautiful. (And your beautiful too Peter).
