How do the Pajero diesels stack up - there are good deals on at present !

Just wondering how reliable the latest Pajero diesel are ? Believe some good offers are about on the Pajero with new on road ones costing approx $48 000 ! Sounds good value to me. Believe the motor is a little noisier than Toyota 3L diesel but at present my own 3L diesel Toyota has a cracked head and I am concerned that the alloy head of the Toyota maybe prone to cracking. I know the Nissan 3L has issues but how about the Pajero how do they stack up ???

Have had mine Did Auto for 12months 26000klms and very pleased with it. Has plenty of power. Have just returned from nth coast 851klms for 77.7litres of fuel (31mpg) and 100 klms of that i towed a caravan (stored it at a mates place).A mate has the same vehicle and he also is very happy with the vehicle. Have a look at Pajero club Vic . There never seems to be any major whinging by owners most seem more than happy with it. Dont look at the petrol model as they are two different cars go diesel.

I have a number of relatives with Pajeros and the only two criticisms received are:

- the second row seating ergonomics are uncomfortable on longer trips esp when there are five on board. However most 4X4 makers really have to get a grip on this. Many families have teenagers and it is hard to get them away at the best of times and less so with uncomfortable seating. A floor hump in middle doesn't help; and

- the dear ($) plastic bits on the outside can come off (why cant they design these out)?

The diesel economy is attractive.

Just looking at the Fink race a week or two ago and the pajero proved to be the best cross country vehicle avialable at the moment. It is competitive straight out of the box. The second was the rangie. Ive been in off road competition for a long time and have seen some very tricked up gear but the pajero is a winner because its fast and reliable. I and others arebleepof with spending big bucks on so called race cars and being beaten by a stock standard pajero. Eric.

I would not doubt they are standard, go and test drive one mine is unbelievable in soft sand (tyres 22lb) it goes where it is hard to walk and being auto is very reassuring when fishing alone,

Regardless of the vehicle, I dont think running 22lb and still driving on sand would put it in a catagory of "soft sand".....

When you are running 3 psi, and still digging and winching to get off the beach, that is soft sand.

Hi Beddo,

I have a current model Di-D Auto, and I have found the motor to be fantastic. I did find the motor a bit noisier at first, being always a petrol man, but I guess that it par for a diesel.

Power and response is great, and hasen't disapointed. I am currently averaging 9.7-9.8l/100km (mixed freeway & city), with commercial racks on top, which I am very happy with.

TripleC thanks for the reply, I have noticed from a test drive that the Pajero diesel is noisier than the Toyotas and the rear seats are a little uncomfortable especially for the person in the middle, but this has improved from previous models. Like the fuel economy and I'm not looking for a hard core 4WD, any scenic spots around the place have usually a half maintained track to them, also from travelling to Cape York along the OTL the Pajero would not have a problem. I like the price Mitsubishi offerred by them, $48,000 seems Ok.

I have had 2 people contact me who have had the new pajero, with tow bar, and sun roof, who have been loaded, gone 4wding, and one dropped onto a rock entering a creek crossing, the other bounced over a log hitting the tow bar [it drove over the log] and both kinked the roof from the top of the c pillar across to the sunroof corner, one was 3 weeks old, when Mitsubishi were approached about the problem, they commented the problem was impact damage and told them to go speak to thier own vehicle insurers.

Interesting to note, I don't doubt those vehicles with a chassis would be much stronger. Might see if I can find out more on this, Thanks. Also yes I don't believe any of those vehiocles are standard, tricked up, strengthened etc. I have driven a couple and they handle well. Thanks everyone for your responses.

I've had my DID for just under 5 months now done 18000k's the only type of terrain i haven't been on would be sand, can't fault the design of the car in anyway, just the standard tyres. The monocoque body is without fault, and wouldn't worry about the roomers of such a design its just hardcore offroaders not willing to accept the change although in my oppinion its for the better. yeah mate if your after a 4wd which is dependable, great on road dynamic and get you to where your needed, can't step past the DID, especially for that price.

Beddo when you see a Paj.Did go and ask the owner what he thinks of the car rather than getting all the negatives from someone who knows someone who has a friend who has one. Every owner ive talked to has been very happy with the car. As for dents in the roof, there is nothing mentioned in the Pajero club forum but what is mentioned is tests that have been done on snatching and being snatched and it came through with flying colours with the strap just attached to one point. If you intend to tow go auto.

Harry, if you ask a owner he always has praise for the car he bought. Anyway here you get everyones biased comments, but from the comments it sounds pretty damn good to me. I must admit I have not been a real fan of Pajero's in the past. But the new ones look pretty damn good and at present real good value. Yep I was going to go auto, not because of towing but because I reckon the autos are so much better in traffic and also in the bush and sand. Might be a ble to push your vehicle a bit harder being manual (won't last as long) and use gearing as brakes. After driving 4WDs for work every day you get sick of a manual.
