Aftermarket diesel fuel filters?

I have a 2.8l 96 diesel pajero, and after getting another load of dirty fuel wonder about what alternative filters are out there? Gets a bit expensive at $30.00 odd a filter for the Z304. I would like to put a cheaper filter in the line to catch the worst of the rubbish first.
Rang the technical section at Ryco and they were a good help. My Z304 filter is a 12/14 micron filter. Could use a Z169a off an Isuzi or a Z14 of an EFI engine.

Or another idea is a filter sock in the filler, so the worst of the rubbish gets picked up before it gets in the tank. Might be a bit slower filling, but may be worth the trouble. Any one heard of this idea or something similar?

Also thought of putting an oil Z9 filter in the line. Can get an adaptor for it cheap enough. But a Z9 is only 30 micron. Any one tried it? Ryco tech suggested it would handle the diesel OK, but had doubts about the filter element standing up to water in the diesel.

I know pressure drop through the filter could be a problem, but can sort that later.

dont know about mitsubishis but there is a cav filter adaptor available for toyotas which incorporates a water trap and a clear section to see if any junk is there. another advantage is that the filters are only about $7 or so. hope this helps.

Bob,

Thanks for the reply.

Out of interest, which model toyota is it.
One idea is to buy the filter from the wreckers and install a CAV unit.

Will also check CAV units for an after market filter.

G'day John,

Anyway, to your problem.....

Like BOB H said, I'd give the CAV filter system a go. I have and the filters are so cheap that it's hard to go past them.

However, I also use a De-Bug unit.... check out their site:

PS: did you ever work for NAB?

I got one similar to one of these but with a primer pump on it as the factory pumps are less than brilliant.

I run the fuel through this, and then into the factory filter as the filters are a lot less. I just made a bracket to mount this one and the factory one back to back. It is not an ideal arrangement as draining the bowl is a bit messy, but it seems to work. I haven’t had any problems with the pump trying to suck through the two filters either.

Use a "Filter technology" or "Frantz" filter (same as the bypass oil filters) and you'll never regret it.
I have for years, (upstream on the factory filter) as they filter down to a micron or two.
Bonus is, it dramatically increases life of injectors and pump AND saves you money on filter elements.
Cheers

Roachie, no havn't worked for NAB.

CAV has been removed from thier price list.
Will investigate the other ideas too.

I have the CAV adaptor and buy Delphi filters thru Coventrys. Bought one the other day and salesman said that Delphi had taken over CAV which would explain why CAV have been removed from any price lists.
Ryco also make a 711-296 type filter. These are an extremely popular diesel filter and there's millions of units out there, so they will keep manufacturing them, rest assured.
To date I haven't had any problems on my 80 series, other than dirty fuel bowl. Filters are around $15 each so I change them more often to be sure but no need really.
