Hoping for some advice from more experienced 4x4ers here...

My 86 HJ 60 wagon, with 300k on it, seems very sluggish when towing my 800 kg boat.
Smokes a little, not too bad though, and the other day, with a slight headwind, I couldnt get the rig over 90k's on the highway.

Also using about 18l per 100k when towing the boat, and around 11 when not.

Only other clue is black soot inside the air cleaner when I checked it this 'arvo...

Thanks for any help.

whatever it is petrol/diesel it means that you are getting exhaust into the intake or too much backpressure. try a good tune up first and take things from there.

Thanks Bob....

Deisel...Motor seems in great order. Good oil Pressure, ultra reliable (Bris- Weipa- Bris-Cairns- Bris) recently...seems fine, except the fule usage and lagg when towing

Hi i have a hj60 1983 H2 motor. when i first bought it it too was sluggish and used a little to much fuel, so had the injectors checked. And yes they were stuffed,
replaced them and hi how silver away she went.Well as best as a non turbo goes.
Also have your fuel filter replaced and your air filter. It might just help a little.

When I traded in my 2H motor for the big V8 diesel, the first thing the mechanic did was to pull off the breather hose that goes from the rocker cover to the intake manifold. He ran the engine and observed the hose end, there was little if anything by way of smoke so he gave me a reasonable trade in for the motor.
Apparently if there is a lot of smoke coming from the breather hose it indicates the motor needs some major overhaul.
This might explain the soot in the air cleaner.

G'day NatBrom,
Sounds like you need to get the compression checked, preferably by a diesel mechanic as this needs to be done with diesel compression tester.
And your injectors and pump may need to be looked at including pump timing.

Cheers,
Moz

Maybe a high detergent after market type flushing oil is neede by your motor to clean it & free it up. Also are valve clearances correct?
Old Triton 2.5 td towing similar boat & camping gear at 90-100 kmh does 11-12l/100kms.

Id be very wary of using a flushing detergent/oil in an old motor. They can disolve sludge around the rings that help maintain compression/clearances.
Its happened to me.
Ive always believed if you give them a good tune they will self clean any excess on top of the pistons and compression chamber.
