GU front wheelbearings

Hi, I have just tightened the left front wheelbearings on my 2000 GU 4.2 turbo having found it to be loose when I changed the tyre. They were serviced 10,000 k's ago. I found only the left side was loose and on removing the free wheeling hub found the screws holding the locking washer were in place. I have spoken to a couple of mechanics who have said this appears to happen on GU's and don't know why. Apparently you have to regularly check the front wheel bearings. Has anyone else heard of this? Haven't heard of it, (that doesn't help you, sorry) and have done a number of mates bearings for them.
But Q. Did you repack them yourself?
Perhaps they weren't done correctly by somebody else (or by you?)
I wouldn't trust SOME mechanics as far as I could throw them.

Thanks Flash, done by a mechanic whom I trust. He did warn me to keep an eye on them, said that although the bearings are larger than on a yota they are too close together. Didn't see any evidence of wear or discolouration/metal in the grease

You wouldn't be able to tell me the bearing numbers or sizes could you?

It was one of those items that are always handy to know. I carry spares that probably don't need to be carried but you never know. i have an 03 4.2tdi and they should all be the same.

OOPS! SKF also do a kit $65.00 a side including seals. Do not know their part number though!

Repacked the bearings on my GU on Saturday, replaced the hub seals ect.....no problems leading up to that so far.....I will definitely keep an eye on them, although I don't see how
the nut can work loose when the screws go through the washer & into
the nut itself.... as you know the washer has tabs that slot into the stub axle....good to know these things!....cheers...Don

GU and GQ bearings are much the same (as are the MQ except for the locking nut). When repacked, they need to be torqued to a certain setting to bed them in. It's quite possible that if not correctly torqued, they can loosen up slightly and will need re-torquing. Those who do it by feel, and not knowing the right feel, are most likely to not to get it quite right. In reality, this can happen to any 4x4 (or even 2by), so those mechanics that say it's just a GU thing, really don't know what they're talking about.
One thing to note. Because of the camber on Australian roads, the left
wheels feel the effect far more than the right hand
wheels ie more strain on the left side. So if the left side hasn't been set up just right, it's likely to go out of kilter first. No big deal, just be aware of it.

the nut was not tensioned correctly as you say. However one of the mechanics I spoke to used to work at Kittle's Nissan here in
Alice Springs and he tells me loose left front wheel nuts were a common occurence on GU's that did alot of dirt work, another fella tells me because the wheel bearings are close together lateral force is exerted on the stub axle and the lock nut by the bearing cage resulting in wear and play. I havent done too many k's in the car so I guess I'll just keep an eye on it and see what happens. There haven't been any responses indicating a problem so hopefully your right and it's bullbleep. There are two ways to checks the bearing pretension, rough, but reasonably accurate.
The first test is after driving for say 10-20 km without a lot of brake use, stop and feel how warm the hubs are. If they are roughly the same temp and warm, but not overly hot, they should be OK.
The second test is to raise each wheel and grab the tyre at the top and the bottom and try to rock the tyre along the axle length. You should not be able to get any movement. If there is movement, you should remove the hubs and give the lock nuts a slight tightening.
Over-tightening of lock nuts and over-greasing of bearings is their biggest killer.
