I am back home for a few days.

Thanks to all who replied to the GQ split rims post. Maybe I will try to run tubeless after all. Will have to upgrade the tyres though.

The alloys that are on the truck are pretty flash. Not so sure about them out in the rough stuff. May have to buy steels and Coopers. Anyone interested in the alloys with 265's Kelly Safaris on can email me through my website.

Rosie has a new owner who is happy with his aqcuisition of a work truck and back up vehicle for his property. So after 6 years and 110,000km we parted company.

And NO I am not buying more goodies for the new truck as I already have everything. Stripped everything off the old truck. It took two days.

Unbeknownst to you Uncle, I have a bag full of stickers entrusted to me by the Great Sticker God, which are for a specific purpose and not to be squandered on reprobates or the like..........hehehehehe

I'll probally get shot for saying this, and all the "alloy brakes, steel bends" comments will come out, but why (if you're moving on board with tubless) bite the bullet and give the alloys a run?
I've run alloy's on all three of my 4bies, and I don't even pretend to have anywhere near your experience out in the bush Williem, but touch wood I've never had a problem, and I give'm a real hard time!

Jeff,

You are right. I am slowly embracing the new ideas with bush travel and I might as well give the alloys a go. If I break them I can always report back to you saying "Well.......?" ....hahahaha

It probably has a lot to do with your tyres too. On my Rodeo I have the standard rims with 225/75 16 BFG A/T KO tyres on the original steel (one-piece) rims. These rims have gauges out of the outer bead bit from rocks and the occaisional concrete gutter. The tyres also have a lot of cosmetic sidewall damage (have heard that is common on BFG).

However if you have a tyre that has a higher profile or just bulges out beyond the rim a little more then it would be the tyre that would cop that damage and not the rim IMHO.

Mate if you break em' I'd be pretty suprised! I broke three wheel studs off my last 4by and the alloy rim just went scooting off down the road!
If they are strong enough to last longer than your wheel studs then what more do you need!! LOL

Willie,

we too are looking forward to meet with Rosie II or is it junior? Obviously old enough for you two. You won't be able to challenge Subies as much now the Commodore has gone though Willie or is it Judith?

I had heard situations like above where the wheel studs had broken or stripped with a lower length on a nut with alloy wheels or the thickness of them.

Hi John

The new truck will be Ruby...quite flash for my tastes...no doubt the scratches will appear soon. It is a compromise. We were budgeting for something of a later vintage but then SWMBO saw the X trail and had to have it(the Commodore has some niggly problems and the time had come). So what was left of the budget bought me the Patrol. I would have preferred an auto but am happy with the manual. No doubt I will find little things to repair on the new truck but after a run up north at the end of the week I will know what is needed. Will see how the alloys handle some of the rought tracks. I had better experience it first before making a judgement. Being a dyed in the wool driver of older technology vehicles this will be a new learning curve. But one is never too old to learn...LOL

Eric, not sure if they are as strong as steel & they can crack, not bend a bit/.
Most steels are SO heavy tho & the difference in unsprung weight & ride etc
is noticeable & they are probably easier on the suspension than the steels.
I have a set of 15x7 alloys & nuts with 30x9.5 motorway tyres for sale as
the offset is too much for my Triton but would be fine for Hilux or L/c etc.
Consider selling rims separately, they are in VGC & in Horsham area.

I would say go with Sunraysias like on mine, the white ones you can get painted any colour, or do yourself ;) $50-60each, if you do bend one, they are cheaper to replace, available anywhere. I have bent 2 of the sunnys, but that was doing 4wdin you will never be likely to try...

As I said, them alloys you have, put on Ebay.. set went few weeks ago for $500+! Without tires.

Start the stopwatch, lets see how long to get the new truck on the road with all goodies!!!

What tires and size are you going to go for?

Being a 1994 model 99% chance will have the bigger brakes over the earlier models. You will be stuck with 16inch rims and the more expensive tires.

Good luck Mr.

Hmmm I have not checked whether they were 15 or 16 inch rims. I just looked at the tyre size 265 x..........

I am doing the last week in the Flinders starting Thursday and will be taking all me tools etc in the trailer to build a storage compartment in the back. Hopefully I will have it completed by next Tuesday. Fitting all the wiring and the second battery will be fun. Luckily I have kept all the paperwork and installation instructions for my battery isolator etc. The truck has a Desert King 70ZZXL in it but I had one in Rosie and it wasn't the best. I have kept my 5yo Yuasa Overlander ZZL as the second battery.

The bullbar is steel(as per your earlier question in another post) and it remains to be seen how I will fit the winch.

Yours is a GQ2. Late model. Lights in the small bumper section.

Since the tires are metric measurement (265...) they will be 16inch rims. The 3 spoke's are 16inch. I should have thought about it more, lack of sleep lately isnt helping.

have you decided on tires yet?

Check out the Caterpillar batteries.. Well worth looking into for main cranking.

Steel bar - kewl.

have fun.

Yeah lights in the bumper and dummy lights on the back panel...weird.

Am thinking about Cooper ST with the non chip lug. Dunno, not in a hurry. Woulkd like something with an aggressive tread pattern. Maybe Silverstones? or Mickey Thompsons? Who knows

Will report back tomorrow evening after Ihave collected the truck in Port Pirie

Still don't have it??? I take it you mean the truck. Picking it up today. Had to wait for a specialist to come and fit a cruise control to the X trail and arranged to pay for and pick the vehicles up in one hit. That will happen today. Life in the country is different to the rush of the city :-)
