Easiest way is to find the power wires and earth so you can exlude them.

Then get the wires you think are the speaker wires and make this simple tool. You will need a C size battery and two short bits of wire. Solder one wire to each end of the battery and then strip and tin the other ends of the wire.

Once this is made you can touch them to the wires in the cars plug and when you hear a speaker make a crackling popping noise then you have found that speakers wires. Then to find out which is positive and which is negative you can have someone look at the speaker (shine a torch through the speaker grill) and see if it is popping in or out. To get the right polarity it needs to pop 'in'.

Do that 4 times and you'll have your wiring code. You will probably be able to figure out the code after you have found one or two speakers using this method. Just pop them anyway to double check.

You can use any battery but I use a C size as that seems to give a better crackle. This will do no harm to your speakers.

Have fun.

Neat idea with the battery Utemad, yeah I agree just work it out, once you've eliminated electric arial, power, ground, acc etc etc it's just the 4 speakers to go! Easy!!
Rating, 3.5/10 swear words.

PS The surf was a 6/10 swear words as they have a factory amplifier in the back (hidden somewhere!!) which requires a relay to be triggered, which is somehow linked to the electric arial also, heaps of fun!! LOL

The ol 80 should be a pretty simple process.

Lots of those Jap imports have amplifiers in them as standard. Pain in the arse. We just removed most of them as they aren't needed if you have a quality head unit. But then you need to run new wires or fiddle with the existing ones.

The amps run off the power antenna so they are only switched on when the stereo is on. Although some stereos have two wires for this as the better ones will only have the antenna up when the radio is on so they need another wire to be on whenever the stereo is on.

Fun fun fun.

Yeah when I origionally fitted it I was getting a humming/clicking noise out of one of the speakers, couldn't figure out how to stop it, then when I re-wired the electric arial so I could bybass it (stop it from going up when in the bush listening to mp3's) it solved the problem, now it sounds great!

Thanks Locallaw

Yes. My Pioneer radio/CD/stacker has 2 power wires. BTW my LC80 GXL has an amplifier in the back, but doesn't work. Now I know why - I don't have a power antenna.
Cheers

One power to accessories and the other to battery. The plug in your Cruiser will have both. Some brands use the battery wire to draw the current and the acc only to tell it to turn on. However others take the current through the acc and the battery wire only to hold the memory settings.

For best performance you should make sure that whichever wire _Affordable_Storage_Drawers.aspx the current in your new unit has a larger diameter wire in the factory plug (you can tell by looking at the inline fuses that came with the radio. Big fuse=current draw wire).

Even then the factory wiring is probably not up to an aftermarket unit. I find it best to wire the earth to something metal and solid in the mounting hole rather than wire it into the plug. Also run a new current drawing wire to the ignition (either acc or battery wire dependant as I said before).

However if you couldn't be bothered to do that it will still work fine most of the time. You would only notice it at high volume/bass. The radio lights may dim and you might hear a clicking noise through the speakers.

Hope I haven't confused the ------- out of you.

Gidday Utemad,I just checked all of the wires for the radio and can only find one power wire which is via the aux switch (no power when switched off). There is no constant power source at all anywhere in the loom.It looks like I will have to run a constant power source to the radio.

I would be surprised if there was no battery wire. However I can't remember what was in a 1994 Cruiser. It should have been a digital. Can't remember the brand (Fujitsu or something sounding similar?). If it had station presets and/or clock it has to have a battery wire to keep the memory. Check your fuses to see if there is a blown one. Although that wiring diagram will tell all.

Easy enough to run a new wire and as I said you will probably be better off anyway.
