I posted earler about my electrical problem in post 15243. Yesterday I found the cause: A wire involving the central locking got pinched behind the UHF and shorted briefly on the antenna coax. This fried the door control computer, which then had a permanent current drain of 4.5 amps.
All I need now is a new controller ($125 s/h or $400 new).
So for the time being, no central locking, but more importantly, no flat battery.
Cheers

G'day John,
Glad you worked it out....those sort of things can be very bloody frustrating.
I guess the whole family is back together by now, eh?

Hi Roachie
Frustrating is right. I spent about 20 hours pulling the car to bits - took out the dash and the main wiring loom, as
well as disconnecting every circuit in the vehicle. Now it will take me 40 hours to reassemble it all. The good news is that now I can re-route all the loose wires and fix them properly while the dash is out, as
well as welding some cracked brackets back on (should cut down the vibration in the dash).
The family was back together, but Anita is back in
Port Augusta for a final 2 weeks from today. Then it will be done, and she can work at
Coober Pedy to pay for our trips LOL.
Cheers
John

Geez..... I installed the complete central locking system in my Rodeo for just inder $60 (can get cheap kits for around $30). That includes 2 master motors and 2 slaves and the control unit. Brand new from Jaycar.
Including the complete alarm system (not from Jaycar) which is a very good one it cost $380.

Yeah I know. The only gripe I have about the Toyota is the cost of some of the spare parts. Unfortunately no aftermarket replacement for the controller, so it's either buy genuine or scrap it altogether and install an aftermarket system.
One thing I like about the Toyota central locking is that you can't lock the driver's door if the key is in the ignition. Handy for SWMBO when she forgets the key - again! LOL
Cheers

Too true! It is quite funny to see the vehicle securely locked, with the keys sitting there on the
seat (it's funny later, anyway, if not at the time).
