G'day all,
Has anyone seen and/or used a bottle jack with a load cell or a device which measures the load on the jack?

Further to my question above if anyone knows where to get hold of one in
Melbourne, that info would be very useful.

No.
You could always puting the jack on some bathroom scales or something a bit more heavy duty if needed. Try calling a weighing machine sales company and see what they have available. You will pay a premium for a specialist type tool, so it minght be easier to adapt something to what you are after.

Hi Murray
I think this link is what you're after. I seem to remember on another
forum that there was some criticism of the manufacturer's customer service standards. :-(
YMMV

G'day
Penguin,
thanks for the contribution, the photograph certainly looks like the jigger I have previously seen on the internet.
I will follow up the link tomorrow, but do you happen to know anything about the "Multi-weigh" or have you just seen it on the internet?
Thanks,
Murray
G'day
Ross,
Thanks for
the tip, do you happen to know which particular caravan mag you have seen this in and/or is it the same as the one
Penguin has seen?

Hi Murray,
Sorry but I haven't used the product at all. It's been discussed on other forums and I've seen it at a caravan show.
Check out this link .

They are around - seen them at various 4WD &
Camping shows but can't remember who has them. Perhaps try your local Hayman Reece or towbar specialist. Could also try Happy Wanderer caravan supplies in SA.

What do you need a load cell for ?? Depending on need, you can get basic hydraulic units with an analogue guage in compression or tension versions, you can also get electronic load cells in both types. If you have the provision to fit a pressure guage to your jack , and know the piston diameter, then you can work it out easily using the force/ pressure/ area calculations, as per any hydraulic work.
IN Melb for an off the shelf item, try a lifting equip. supplier like all slings and chains on the hume hwy, or even try a weighing systems manufacturer like elphinstone.
Cheers Brad

G'day Bradley,
I am wanting to weigh a large cumbersome item in our factory. It probably weighs in at about 150-200kgs, but in order to do some further engineering calcs. we need to know the weight of this bulky, awkward item a little more precisely.
Its a one off task and I thought the bottle jack idea that I can vaguely remember seeing on the internet many moons ago might be the cheapest/simplest solution.
I can't recall whether the jigger I saw had load cells or what but the thing that
Penguin came up with looks vaguely familiar.

only 150 - 200 kg? two reasonable bathroom scales would easily share this load. And, they are useful afterwards, since you are talking about a one off task.

Hi again Murray, if you are after an accurate weight, then i am pretty sure you can hire load cells by the day etc. Try Ruddweigh or elphinstone, i'm sure there are others out there as
well.
Shame i'm not at the airport anymore, we used to have some nice load cells - i could have 'borrowed ' a set for a few days :-)
Had a look at the other links, same idea as i had above, but the unit for sale only has a cheap un-calibrated guage, and it sounds like you need a fairly accurate measurement.
Good luck Buddy, Brad

Look in a caravan magazine. They are advertised for about $130.
