I spoke to Nissan UK today and asked them about the new patrol. The patrol should be on sale in the UK in about 6 weeks. He also confirmed that the changes are mainly cosmetic BUT there are changes to the 3.0 engines. They have increased the power and torque as they have finally admitted it needs more torque. I hope behind the glossy brochure propaganda they have also used this as an opportunity to finally lay the 3.0 problems to rest. I do not understand why there were problems in the first place as this engine is used in many Renault/Iveco trucks in Europe and they cover massive mileages with no problem. We have some small 7.5-ton trucks in our work with this engine and both have covered 250,000 miles no problem. They are sending me a brochure in a few weeks I will scan it in if anybody wants a look.

Yes Scottcamp I cant understand the issue with these motors either. I do know the earlier ones were due to redesigned sumps, but they were fixed mid 2000. Before we got one I researched the motor and found that they were in trucks all over the place, but its definitely been an issue here, one I am altogether unhappy about, funny what you find out AFTER buying something. Well my hope is that Nissan will stand by us if our motor needs to go elsewhere. All I have to do is take a sta phobe with us outback and only one number needs be called iffit goes BANG.

Hi Bonz,

Is your car a 2000 model or are you expecting trouble from a newer engine? Are the new engines failing as well?

Mine is a November 2000 model, the sump and oil flow issues have been sorted but later ones than mine have failed and theres a thread mentioning that the GUIII has had a few failures but its a Mum of a friends brothers aunt that had the engine fail, no 1st hand experiences.

Have a look thru the search funcition in the forum. theres a fair bit about them

Hi Truckster,

Unfortunately we do not get the TD-6 in the UK, it was phased out years ago. We only get the 3.0 TD, I guess because of the price of fuel. Remember we pay £3.80 a gallon for Diesel. Can anyone tell me if the newer engines have the same problems or are they fixed?

Thanks

I read somewhere that the problems with blowing #1 piston in series 1's was due to an increase in tolerance in fuel pump to handle Australia's (at the time) poor quality diesel (higher particulates) , in 2001 the standards were tightened.

The reliability problems were due to the redesigned sump AND twat-users NOT changing their oil every five to ten thousand km's.

The new sumps require eight litres of oil, where the old sumps required only four and a half, with another half in the filter plumbing.

The new patrol will have substantial changes apparently.. New front-end set up and nicer interior. Sheet metal changes are minimal from what I can see.

The front-end has stayed Live too. Nummy! Time to trade the 2001 3.0TDi in!!!!
