Hello All
After posting news about the new 3.0 TD I was surprised to see that some people are still concerned about the 3.0 TD. I was under the understanding that the "Teething" problems had been fixed and this engine was now as reliable as any other 4-cylinder engine. I know the debate about 6 and 4 cylinder engines could go on forever, personally I do agree that a 6 should last longer. But in Europe the 4 cylinder engine is by far the biggest seller and there is no reason why a 4 cylinder should not last in excess of 300,000
miles. So what I am really asking is:
Are there still problems with the new 3.0TD?
In fact it would be good to know once and for all if the problems have been solved. Does anyone know of a 2003 onwards 3.0 TD failing completely? I think if you know of any newer engines failing then there are real problems with this engine, as it does not take 2 years to fix teething problems. I do not know if it was the same in Australia but in the UK there were major problems with the early Toyota 80 series 6 cylinder engines. When Toyota introduced the 80 series they hastily modified the petrol and diesels from the 60s. It is
well know in the UK that you should avoid 80s built between 1990 and 1992. But as we all know this engine turned out very reliable. So maybe the 3.0 TD will be reliable, but if 2003 on engines are still failing then maybe the engine is just not up to the job. So does anyone know of any 2003 onwards engines going the way of the Dodo?

In both the patrol, and the navara, there are afew, in Vic, and IMHO the issue of gear box and engine "fixes" that have been offered are more short term "get them out of warranty" than what you could actually call a totaL FIX of the issue.
Time will prove me right or wrong, but I dont have any money invested in the outcome, because I dont have a 3.0 nissan .

No-one has any idea of the GENUINE statistics involving this issue. What needs to be applied here is some scientific method, because right now a psycho-pathological responce is being triggered by this topic. Facts and figures will be required to separate fact from fiction.

Or as I like to say "this thread is just text without data" ;-)
On a username based "chat"
forum, all you will get is opinions, and experience, thats why I dont pose the type of questions here captain, and others do, I speak to the people actually performing the works, to get thier experience on the subject.

Of course, its the signal to noise ratio which determines the amount of tech info any forum/list is good for.
Thats why dividing up a
forum to at least
General
Tech
Travel
Then you could just check the part with the best signal, or browse the "noise" section when you have time on your hands. ;-)

Scottcamp,
I don't know if you could commit to saying all the problems have been fixed, being a
forum like it is people will be looking to report problems and in some cases positives, a lot of people dare I say the majority who drive 4w drives won't even visit this
forum so you would never get a true picture of how bad the problem is. The local ARB here has never had a person come into the
shop and complain about an engine going West I spoke to a couple of mechanics in the Nissan workshop, not the sales guys, asking how many Nissan 3.0 litre TD engines have you replaced he could remember two I think and that was the Nissan agent, yes they fitted the bigger sump on the series one engines
mine has one, plus the 5th gear on
mine has been replaced, apart from that I have no other evidence of problems, mines a 2000 series 1 with about 140 thousand K's on the clock, runs like a Swiss watch, I've towed my trailer down
the beach on the really soft sand just to give the motor a work out, plus hard sand climbs. The economy is good and I'm happy, maybe I got the good one they made in 2000, I don't think so. They have sold thousands and thousands of these vehicles sure you will get the occasional problem.
I've known more club members in our 4 wd club smash front diffs in their 100 series LC's than I have blow 3.0 TD engines as a comparison, more people have taken their Coopers tyres back under warranty for not reaching 80,000 K's, price difference I know. In the UK when I was there working on mechanical things we used race each other changing 1.6 and 2.0 litre camshafts in the Ford Pinto engines, I was doing this for years no one came up with a better design or a solution apart from you need to change your oil more often.
I don't want to start a poo fight here this is just an opinion from a satisfied and happy 3.0 litre TD owner, I'm sure I'm not alone.

Most nissan workshops deny any issues though, so dont take their word for it.
Funny thing happened with mate that worked for local nissan dealer as SPareparts bloke then worked up to workshop manager. I asked there one day if there were any issues with 3.0 GU to workshop bloke that books jobs in, he said "NEVER HEARD OF ONE"... Then Brett turned to him and said
"Gee your full ofbleep... Theres 2 out the back now."
Even the sales people deny it, but then they arent going to sell cars by admiting issues are they!
Ask a toyota dealer about the Front arm issues - or the old 80 series big ends when they first happened, bet they denied it too..
YMMV

They are not
forth comming with info but I have got to know the NIssan dealer where I bought
mine and they have only had a few. He seemed to think the country dealers would have more of the problems.

TMan,
Sorry about the last post I thought I'd got past that by now. Anyway, yes I know about the trust thing and telling me what I want to hear, the guys I deal with are pretty straight, or that's what I've found at least. It was only my opinion and pointing out that I was happy with the one I have. I've taken the point.
