intermitent ignition problem

I have a problem with my HZJ78 ignition. If I have my foot on the brake or turn on the park lights and then turn on the ignition the dash lights fade or disapear and the vehicle will not start. When I turn on the car without the above the vehicle will start. I have no problems after this. all lights etc will work when the car is running. I have relplaced the battery earth and added an extra earth to the chassis. Has anyone experienced a similar problem? The problem arose after a trip on a reasonably rough corrugated road. Rossco. The vehicle is a 2001 Troopy.

There has got to be a bad connection somewhere. Starter motor, Battery terminal, Starter solinoid, check tightness of the battery leads. Had to put a finger on it but that should be a start.

Depending on how much time you have $50 will get it solved by your local auto lecky! Then get him to tell you and show you how he fixed it!

I agree. You could spent another 3 mnths chasing this, and get nowhere, when a word to autospark may fix in no time.

Then again $50 probably wont get you much more than in the door with an autospark, and being an elect issue, tracking it down can take hours.

Maybe no help, but how many keys do you have on your keyring? I have heard that too many ( too heavy) and driving on corrugated roads will cause the key barrel to wear and cause electrical shorts. Sometimes the car will just stop and then start going again. So it could be ignition switch.

Check your fusible links. My guess is that one of them is hanging on by a thread.

Thanks for info. I have already replaced the fusible link (from past experience with the old 75) and the ignition relay.

I have thought about the number of keys and I will check the back of the combination switch for visible problems.

After that it will be at the sparkies on Friday.

What kind of problem did you have with the fusable links on the 75 series and did you replace them (two) with the same type

The problem with the fusible links on the troopy were caused by vibration. It only happened twice in 540,000 kays on the 75 series. I used genuine parts to replace both times ($30 or less from Toyota). I have always kept a replacement in the toolbox. The last fusable link was in the car for at least 200,000 and was still going when the engine became too tired. Its difficult to kill a 2H. 'Old troopies never die, they just tire gracefully'!

Long shot, but if u have been installing accessories in the cruiser previous, you may have earthed them using the main instrument earths that are on the insides of the front door jams just under dash height. If one has come loose, you will get this sort of thing happening.
Another way to describe where i am talking about is at thigh level (when seated) against the side of the kick panel.
