Hi all,

Got the Jackaroo a bit (a lot) muddy on Sunday and managed to get crud into the aircon compressor clutch and pulley? Now it's making a low grinding type noise.

I have tried cleaning out by flushing it with water and have been able to reduce the amount of noise but haven't been able to get rid of it altogether.

Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to get the dirt out, without having to remove the compressor from the vehicle?

Last time I filled mine with gunk I just left the motor ldling and pointed the hose at the clutch. Also try turning of the motor and shoving the end of the hose right in the clutch. Lots of water from a number of directions usually does the trick. A spray of truck wash and then a good wash may also help.
WD40 is not a good idea as the clutch tends to slip a lot. I have seen that done too.

I would say dont waste anymore time, do what you will end up having to do, and remove it and do it properly.

Isnt doing good grinding away in there, and longer you leave it, the worse it will get.

Just remove it, and clean it up properly.

And perhaps replace the bearing which may be now making that grinding noise....

was thinking that too, while you have it apart - saves doing the job again.

That's the problem. Harrison (the maker of the compressor) hasn't made dismantling the pulley an easy job on this particular compressor.

I wanted to go down the cleaning out path before I go the disassembly path.

You guys are most likely right, though .... bugger

Can you replace the compressor with something from another model car?

EG Commodore or something that are dime a dozen?
Sanden 508's are about $30 from wreckers!

Hi,

When mine was pretty noisy an AC mechanic had me cycle the air con on and off with the switch and poured thinners over the clutch. Took the noise away completely and that was about 8 years ago so didn't have any long term effects.

Regards

Thanks Austravel,

Interesting idea. Can you tell me what sort of noise it was making?
