Howdy all, my 1991 1hdt engine developed roughness today and then started emmiting a loud tapping sound that increased with revs. Any ideas, it feels like it is missing and the power may be slightly down. I have stopped driving it because it sounds major, should I be preparing for the worst? All help apreciated.
Cheers,
Charlie

Sounds like something to do with the valves???
Take it to a diesel specialist.

Have the big end bearings ever been replaced? They were a problem on this model. See this link
Could cost a few $$$ if damage done.

Having read this I certainly would be going to a diesel specialist!
It does sound like you have the symptoms.

I went to a couple of mechanics and they each told me it was probably the valves. They said that the big end bearing would present different symtoms. I certainly was hoping that it wasn't the big end!

Sounds more like you might actually have a dicky injector. Happened once to me and sounded like something big time had come adrift. One way to check is to crack each injector line (where the fuel line joins the injector) with an appropriate spanner while the engine is running and if the noise disappears when one injector is cracked, there's your problem. If you don't know how to do this, any diesel mechanic can. All that might be need is an injector repair. I'm not familiar with Toyotas, so it might need an injector replacement if this is the problem.

Hi Charlie
Both the previous replys are a posibility, with the bearing problem there should be a difference in your oil pressure, so this could help point you in the right dirrection, there is another possibility that your cam belt is badly worn and the cam timing has slipped, this is not common.

Evening Charlie
I have just spent a week converting the fuel filter system on my 1HZ Troopy from original Toyota to Lucas CAV.
The reason it has taken a week is because of the most bizarre set of circumstances occurring that in essence lead to major air leaks into mthe fuel line.
All the factors causing this and there were a few, have been finally been corrected with it now running perfectly.
However , it was running like a dog with three legs at one stage and making noises like you decribe.
I took it for a test drive Last Sunday and on the way home it had a major loss of power, wouldn't go over 1800rpm, stalled when stopping at lights, making your type of noises.
As it has only done 68,000kms I wasn't to fussed about the timing belt, bearing things and nursed it home in 3rd gear. How embarrasment.
Anyway it was air in the fuel line and now I know every inch of that fuel line excluding the pump like the back of my hand in the dark so to speak.
Invaluable experience I am told which I could have done without. Stress!Oooooooooooh! the stress levels were really up.
This may assist you
Regards
Ken Robinson
PS
If there are any queries as to why I changed, they are (1) Cost - CAV filters cost between $5 and $7 depending on where you get them. Plus there are now two glass inspection bowls with drain plugs.

Could be anything....the roughness indicates fuel problems, most probably filtration. I would start by changing the filter, and cutting the old one appart to see if there is algaie in it.
