hi all,
i have recently bought an 83 hilux and in the last week it has developed a whine from the front diff, the car seems to be driving fine and i have checked the calipers as i thought they mave have seized but no luck. i had the rear bearings changed a few weeks ago and i am wondering if maybe the front bearings should be done too?could it be that the
wheels need a balance/alingnment?any help would be really appreciated
cheers
rob

an 83 Hilux should have free wheeling hubs. So if you unlock them and it is in 2wd then its not the front diff.

good point utemad, should have realised that,my first thought when it started making noise was that the hubs were locked but they are both on free, any other ideas what could be making the noise?it is a loud whine that only appears when i am accelerating and at times it sounds as if there is a hole in the exhaust,i havent had a chance to have a good look over the exhaust yet so that could be a possibilty..
thanks for your reply mate

My brother had a very similar sounding noise in his FJ45 although he has a 351 V8 in it.
He said it was a vacuum leak I believe. It didn't make the noise except when he opened the throttle.
I'd be checking all my vacuum hoses.
An exhaust leak usually comes with a loud tappet noise in my experience.
It is just a matter of thinking of things it could be and then ruling them out until you find the cause.
Have fun :-)
