Hi Tim,
David and I went to the BVI races in 1999 (pre-kids) but now have 2. Basically its one big P** up. We know the locals in town and did some work there and were there a month prior to races and a month or two after also and it was amazing to watch the town change. Races fever is incredible - its one of the those interesting outback experiences to see all manner of lifeforms congreate for one 5 minute horse race but its much more than that if you're in the mood. For the kids - it will just be an experience in people watching and being entertained like at a fair but not much else. Many people viist
Birdsville at Races time but actually don't go down to the racecourse on race day for actual
Birdsville Cup race as most of the "action" happens around the main street outside the
Birdsville Pub. As for
camping - normally there is just the pub (hotel rooms) or the caravan
park. During Races, overflow
camping is also allowed down along the Diamantina River.
Birdsville at any time has a few other good things to see such as the works of
water colour painting artist Wolfgang John at the Blue Pole Gallery - and their cafe serving excellent food all day - with quality music and atmosphere. Karsten and Jackie who run the cafe have 2 kids of their own so they are very accomodating of kids and have
camp fire entertainment at nights too that they'll love.
Birdsville is really what you make of it - at any time. Go with an open mind and you'll enjoy it. Have fun and say hi to all from us.

Tim
As a fellow Terracan owner I would love to go but have already planned to go next year. Am making it a 3 week trip and towing my
Camp-O-Matic Camper Trailer(love it) behind the Terracan. Have a great time and look forward to a report on how the Terracan performed out there. As Michelle says, take it for what it is and you will really enjoy.
PS. Am off to Egypt for 2 weeks in October so that's why
Birdsville got put back to next year. Hope the "Terracan" is waterproof to get across the Indian Ocean to Egypt :)

Tim, I did ring you, we won't be leaving until the 1st September, probably going thru
Broken HIll, then
Arkaroola,
Cameron Corner,
Bore Track to
Innamincka ..... then Birdsvillle, so we won't be there for the races. Then going to Maree,
Oodnadatta,
Dalhousie Springs then probably Ayers Rock.

Don't forget your Exploroz member card if you do make it Tim. Just by showing it you get your first beer free at the pub, and you get free cake & coffee with every Wolfgang John print purchased.
There are definitely more families coming these days, and although there is only
camping - you're not alone.....
Have a good trip.
