I am considering fiting an aftermarket turbo to my 2001 1HZ powered manual 100 series (HZJ105R) 104,000Km set up for long range touring and would like the feedback of people who have fitted an aftermarket turbo to a 1HZ
The power advantages are without dispute what I am concerned with is reliability and Installation quality.
The Turbos that I an aware of are ,Denco , Turbo Glide, MTQ/DTS and Safari/APS.
The main contenders are the MTQ and Safari units without intercoolers.
Recommendations for fitters in the SE Qld area
I would like to know brand of unit and Km's when fitted and Km's done since fitted.
Any issues or praises
Comments on the value of
aneriod/boost compensators
High flow Exhaust ( and noise levels)
Observations on
Relaibility
Cooling requirments
Low rev torque and torque spread
Economy
Driveline Issues including clutch
Fuel system Issues (premature Injector failure due to higher injection volumes)
Reaction of Vehicle insurer
Also in my investigations re the 100 series 1HZ Diesel weaknesses have come to light
1) Weak injector Springs requiring servicing often at less than 100,000Km
2) An intermitant Acceleration flat Spot generaly under 2000 RPM I have heard of Injector pumps been replaced under warranty for this, and I have experienced this issue myself but it dissappears by the time you get it to the dealers.
Thanks

Mate,
In March 03, I had a DTS Turbo fitted to my 1HZ Diesel '91 Series 80 GXL and I haven't looked back. It was the best thing I had done. My km at the time was around 200 000 km. I had it fitted in Sthn NSW.
I have since fitted a 65mm (2 1/2") exhaust. About 12 months before I had the turbo fitted I had my injectors and fuel pump done as I was blowing more black smoke than Puff the Magic Dragon.
I have not had any reliablity or cooling problems and my economy is about the same - 14.5l per 100km.
No issues with the clutch other than normal backlash from the constant four wheel drive. Nor with the fuel system.
No worries with my Insurer (TCIS).
Go for it - you want regret it.
Karl

I know it is expensive but I would get the intercooler as
well.
I fitted a turbo to my 80 and am happy but we are mucking around with intercoolers at the moment and are getting realy good results.
Mate just had a Safari kit with intercooler all done at the same time and he is very happy with it More power cooler temps and same fuel consumption.
