current hilux tray on previous shape

A friend of
mine has the previous shape (pre 97) Hilux dual cab and wants to know what it takes to fit a current shape styleside tray to it as you can get these trays pretty cheap and his is all beaten up.
Any help would be appreciated. Especially from those that have done it.
