Hi all, my 80 series is up for a front diff overhaul. I have been quoted $1200 for seals and bearings both sides. I may need the cv's done as well. My question is, has any 80 series owners had their diff done recently, and if so, what costs are involved. Although I tackle most repair jobs myself, I feel this one is better left to the experts.

Thanks, Stitch.

Hi Stitch
Big job, but wow...$1200 for $150 odd worth of parts plus fitting??? Kit consists of 4 brgs, i crush slieve and one seal. Depending on kms and whether your 80 is part timed or full timed, the c/v's will need renewing aswell...Toyota 600 each, generic as low as 100 each depending on who and where.
ARB will put a diff lock in there for $1500 with compressor. If u asked them to renew brgs whilst there, u might be looking at as little as $1700 considering it will be apart anyway.
Food for thought hey....500 extra for a difflock and compresser (and the locker strengthens a weak link in the 80 drive train aswell)

Thanks Dozer, It is full time and it already has air lockers front/rear. I guess I will shop around for the best price. I tend to use genuine parts for these type of jobs, but could probably save heaps looking elsewear.

Gday
Toyota dont make bearings, only a tidy profit from repackaging them in Toyota boxes. They use NTN or Koyo brands, which are alot cheaper from a place like SES or CBC bearings. A friend bought a rear engine oil seal from Toyota for $85 a few weeks ago, which i then took it to SES who sold me another identical seal for $16.50. They obviously made a profit on it, selling it to me at that price, so i guess we will be seeing alot more advertising about keeping Toyotas all Toyota in the future....
Where are you situated Stitch?

Andrew,
that doesn't surprise me at all. I am thinking of chasing the parts down myself and shopping around for the cheapest quote of fitting them. By the way, I'm on the NSW Central Coast, Gosford area.

when i did that in my old 60 series, from memroy i got the whole kit from don kyatts for about 470 bucks and did it over 2 days with help from relative who is a mechanic to get the diff back together, that included all bearing and seals from hub to hub.
