My neighbour has just returned from a trip from
Cairns to
Cooktown i n his Ti Patrol (auto) He had the vehicle in 4wd all down the
Bloomfield Track( I thought "not necessary in the dry). At
Cape Tribulation the car would not come out of 4wd even after trying reverse etc. The RACQ managed to turn it off, but it came on again after only a few seconds of driving, anyone any clues?

It sounds like a bit of transmission windup.
He might try jacking a wheel or getting two
wheels on one side in some loose gravel and giving it a boot full to make the
wheels spin then try unlocking the hubs if it is an option. I had it happen in a troopy once and couldn't get it out of 4 high even by applying excessive force to the transfer lever. Span the
wheels and it came good.
Hopefuly there is no permanant damage.

scored a free meal from some girls on the grr for getting their 4by out of 4wd. all the usual things reverse - bunny hopping and shifting outin the middle - same but bunny hop in reverse the other thing is it actually in 4wd? try unlocking the hubs then jump underneath and spinning the front tailshaft

As Davoe asked, is it actually in 4wd or might it be a faulty connection in the circuit that makes the light on the dash come on?

Thanks hoyks, I suggested this to the owner but he assures me that the streering is very heavy, suggesting that 4wd is engaged.
