There is lots of room to fit a oil cooler.I removed the front grill and fitted a two row cooler very easy, connect with two rubber hoses to the original pipes at the bottom of the radiator.Do not fit the cooler inside the lower bash plate/engine protecter it will get squashed if the plate gets bent. The black smoke is unburnt fuel you need to have the pump and injectors looked at.

Hi, in regards to your black smoke? Could be a couple of things. I was told some time ago that the fuel pump is setup to whether north or south Japan. plus our fuel can be part of the problem. Like oils ain't oils
diesel ain't diesel, the difference for my hzj80 750-900 km's for the main tank thats 20%, normally 830-880 km's through one supplier.
My 80 had a smoking problem, but apparently it was set up correctly
I've added a hyclone and use redline RL2 fuel additive, results, heaps less smoke and a saving of an extra 200km/ 140lt's This includes factoring in the price of the additive. I think the fuel additive is a good place to start and monitor fuel usage.here's to improvment.
