when the quick warm up switch is activated on our auto jackaroo there is a major hissing sound coming near the drivers side wheel. tryed everything but have failed, when not at idle there is no sound.
our jack idles very bad sometimes and almost stalls, could this be something to do with the diesel or is it the oil

It could be the injector seals, if it is a 3.0TD, there was a re-call on these motors in Japan in 1999. I don't know if there has been one in Aus, but there has been problems with this all over the world, so I would give your Holden dealer a call and see what they have to say (probaly not much).
There is a bit of a dissusion on this matter on a thread in our club at the moment www.clubisuzu.com under engines and jerky accelerator.
Cheers Bruce.

Jack Fan,

I work with an ex Holden Tech, he tells me that the latest mod is replacing the metal sleeve that goes into the combustion chamber, i think the injector sits in this sleeve, he also says this problem is a never ending saga and the feeling i got from him was that he was not confident that this is "The FIX" for the problem.

Regards

A 2002 should still be under warranty. Let the dealer sort it out.

I had the exact same issue on my 99TD. It was plagued with starting problems and I got rid of it simply becuase in winter, it would not start.
As for the hissing sound, I think that only occurred at idle, once you give it a few revs, the hissing stops.

Tried the dealer they said there’s nothing wrong (not to bright)

As for the hissing it is still there after a few revs when engine has warmed up it is fine. They are a good vehicle and apart from that it great, so I think I will just leave it hiss (give it a charter).

Thx anyway

My 99 TD nevers seems to exhibit any difference in behaviour with the QWU switch on or off. Starting has been a bit of an issue lately, but the battery (just one 600 cca cranker) was getting a bit tired - have changed it for a 700cca Yuasa Overlander. We don't live in a super cold zone - can understand the foregoing comment re bad starting - in very cold climates you would have to have thin oil and two batteries paralleled to get anywhere. They can be a real bugger. Ours still runs sweetly with 88 on the clock....hope it stays that way.

the QWU actually reves the car up at 900rpm and we need this on a cold morning or else the jack plays up a treat.

I have a '98 3.0L TDI which has the same "hissing" noise when using the QWU switch. I know a few other people with 3.0L TDi's and they exhibit the same behaviour, so therefore I believe it is normal and nothing to worry about. A mate of mine with the same vehicle was told by Holden to leave the QWU on all the time, and it will manage itself. I live above the snowline (can get down to -15degC) and never use the QWU.
On the subject of cold starting, I never had a problem with cold starting until Holden carried out the recall to replace the apparently faulty Injector Seals in Feb '04. Ever since then my vehicle almost fails to start in the cold every time, and Holden wants nothing to do with it.
I use the correct oil for cold areas as recommended by Holden (GTX Magnatec 10W-40). The saga continues!!!
