Any Jackaroo owners have the same problem?

I have a '93 Jackaroo 3.2L XS which I bought in 1999 @ 204000 kms. It has now done 335000 kms and in the period I have owned it has always had a noticable tappet noise from a cold start which disappeared when the engine came up to normal operating temperature. Whilst this is mostly the case I have noticed that once the oil is around 5000 - 7000 kms old it appears to become worse or more prevalent. At different times the noise does not disappear at all, even after around 50 kms constant driving. Does anyone else out there have a similar situation? I have been told by a couple of other owners that it all boils down to the type of oil used. One guy told me that he only uses Mobil 1 (bloody expensive - especially when you need 6L!). I always use Mobil 8000 fuel and I currently change the oil at around 10000 kms (both oil & filter) using 5L Shell Helix 10W/40W and 1L of Moreys. Am I doing something wrong? Any suggestions?

It sounds to me like a noiesy lifter. I'm sure they would be hydraulic so there is no adjustment necessary.
Lots of motors do this - common problem and the cheapest fix is to turn the wireless volume up!!
You could try some Wynns oil additive for noisy lifters. I tried it over the years with mixed results.
Cheers Peter Guy.

had a 1978 Nissan E20 with the same problem - went away after using Valvoline oil, and its cheap.

3.0L Nissan straight 6 petrol's were absolutally renowed for it. The early 90's patrols, VL commodores and skylines. Even my 1991 Maxima (slightly more advanced version of the 3.0L) did the same thing, it started doing it just after 100kms, I sole it about 50k later and it was still running sweet, except for the tappet/lifter noise on startup.
My dad had a VL commodore (same motor) on gas, it used to rattle all the way down the street, over 300k on the clock he sold it running great. So well in fact he wipped a rag around the inside of the exaust pipe and it was clean. (he never ran it on ULP,only on gas).

It is a prevalent problem with the old 3.2 V6, it's just how it is.

The only way to keep it under control is to keep your oil changes frequent. Any of the good brands will do the trick, you don't need to use Mobil 1.

Why don't you try Penrite HPR10? It's a 10W-50 oil, so at cold start it is the same as the Helix 10W-40. At operating temperature it is heavier than the Helix and you won't need to add the Morey additive. About $25-$29 for 5L.

If that's the only problem then at 335000km it's going very well.

PS ... According to the service CD I have, the '93 3.2 takes 5.4L including filter change. Are you sure you are not overfilling it and causing foaming in the crankcase by putting in 6L?

Bubba,

I work with an ex holden tech.

He says this is common on the old 3.2. From memory repace lifters, rockers&associated gaskets, he says parts price alone is approx $2500.00.

If you want more concise info let me knoe, i'll speak with him again on the subject,

Regards

Greg

Ok... I had a similar problem and I discovered that it was because there was to much oil in the sump and the sump oil was being beaten to foam because the crank was actually hitting it...I then used to fill to approximatly halfway between the 2 marks on the dipstick and the noise went away... very strange I know but that solved the problem.

I have a 92 Jackaroo 3.2L V6 and I have the same problem. I change my oil every 5000 K and oil filter every 10000 k.It seems to help. when I got the car it had oil in it which was 8000 K old. I put new oil in it and it made a difference. My mechanic said to use 20W 50 oil with a rating of SJ? The car still runs very well and I figure 5000 K oil changes won't send me broke so thats is what I do.

Still hear the that tappet noise occasionaly though.

Thanks to all who posted replys to this forum. You have all confirmed what I thought, that is oil and oil levels are critical.

Will try the Penrite 20W/50W and Sparkie's oil change intervals.

2 days ago the problem disappeared just as quickly as it appeared and engine is one again as quite as a mouse (or as quite as a 3.2L Isuzu motor can be), and I didn't do anything to rectify the problem except give the old girl a bath. Go figure.
