I don't believe there are any permits needed for the roads to Mt Dare. What tracks are you actually taking in the Finke Desert?? Craig..........

As I remember you won't need permits to Mt Dare. However you will need a Desert Parks pas to cross the Simpson. You may be able to buy one from Mt dare. Not sure of that so give them a ring. Also find out how much. Not cheap so be prepared.

Have fun.

I think you need the Desert Parks Pass for camping in the Simpson, not for crossing it. Am I correct ?

Gee your not going to cross the Simpson without stopping (I hope) so you need the Desert Parks Pass.
It's got nothing to do with camping particularly, just being there, and of course you will be camping. Some parts of the Simpson are private property. But depending on just where you go you could be in the Simpson Desert National Park, the Simpson Desert Conservation Park, the Simpson Desert Regional Reserve, or the Witjara National Park (who cares)
It doesn't matter which route you take you will travel through most of the above.

They sell the passes here on ExOz & I think the price is the same everwhere. What ever the cost is, it's cheap for the experience and they give lots of info in with the pass about the deserts.

Suck it in, it's the challenge of a life time.

Finke to Mt Dare, no permit reqd as public roads, Simpson Desert SA sections definitely require a DPP and you will receive an on the spot fine for not having one.
If camping in the QLD section of the simpson you are also required to a have a permit.

Desert Parks Pass costs $90 (or $60 to renew of you had one last year). Gives you entry and camping (where relevant) to most of SA's outback National Parks and reserves for a year. It'll cost a lot more if you get nabbed without one.

Finke to Mt Dare is PAR (public access route) so no permits required.

Cheers
