I am looking at upgrading to mud tyres. At this stage I have a preferance for BFG or Coopers. I will be running 265/75/16's. What is the tyre life like for a mud tyre particularly when used on road. Also any details of experinces with mud tyres aquaplanning on wet sealed roads and details of their performance on sand.

Article in 4WD Monthly actually does answer a lot of Stephens questions.
Each tyre is rated for road and off road performance, noise etc...

Stephen I dont run those brands but run good year wranglers MTR .
I run 2 sets and take the muddies of when not on tour to date have about 40k and half worn.
I have not had a prob with wet weather on tar.
Also they go well on sand with the rite pressures.
We have had most types of tyres away with us and all have good and bad points.

All the best

T-Man,
Back to front maybe, then maybe the MTR's over the Coopers, LOL my opnion as usual............... If the MTR's will keep the mud out from between the rim & the tyre I'll give them a go maybe........ and no I'm not running the pressures to low.......

Eric,
Seems to be an ongoing problem for me, I used to drop the pressure to around 25 psi I usually then got mud in all four rims, now I'm on about 30 psi I only get mud in a couple of rims, I've had suggestions of silicon but I don't really want to go down that track. I've never had this much trouble before this winter has been really bad, maybe I'm playing harder tha usual. I'm getting the balance weights chenged from the clip on type to the stick on type, this may help.

Martyn I run my MTR'S on 18 front and 24 rear for a cape trip and thats about a 2,800k trip and dont seem to have a problem with mud on beads.
Im not sure but bead locks could be the answer.
Im sure they run a lot lower preasuers than that in comps.

All the best

What size MTR and what size rims you using Martyn? Maybe thats the issue?

I run 33x12.5s on 15x8's and have run them for a whole night (night run)out 4bing at 14psi.. Not a problem.

They probably would work better on 7's but know others runnin 11.5's on 8's without too much hassle...

Weird.

We use Pro Comp 33 X 12.5 muds. Have had them on for 15 months/30+ thousand K's, mostly on road but when off road they come into their own. Sand on Fraser hasn't been a problem, never looked like getting stuck. Noisier than highway tyres of course, but on-road we drive with windows up and the stereo on anyway, so it's liveable, off road we have the windows down and any noise is good for the soul isn't it???!!! :-)
Hope this helps
