Can any owners give me the fuel consumption figures on the current 3 Ltr Diesel & the 4 Ltr petrol. Would appreciate both city & country litres per hundred. Took a quick look underneath the 6 cyl & noticed that the exhaust runs paralel under the transmission and appears to have minimal clearance. Apart from getting dragged off on the first stump or log, the thing that concerns me is the heat build up against the transmission. The fuel
tank looks pretty vunerable also. I'm not knocking the latest Prado, Landcruiser or the Nissans but compared to the 60 series (my chariot) the latest vehicles look good on the outside but don't have the underside protection when venturing off road. Maybe I'm a little over concerned but when your trying to update it seems that with the newer ones they want your money but give bugger all underneath. Many times out west when going over the crest of dams & logs I have dragged the bash plate on the gear box & transfer case, and if it wasn't for the substantial one on the 60 series it would have been a long walk home had damage occured.Anyhow now that I've had my beef, would appreciate any answers to the above.

I have a mate that recently bought a V6 4.0L Petrol Prado, and on run-in it was using an average of 22l/100km. Pretty hard to believe they are this thirsty, but he assures me this was correct. Haven't caught up with him to see what it settled down to after run-in.

Thanks HiJack,
Got a BA XR8 with a 260 kw motor that uses 11 lts to 100 on a trip with a average of 13.9 overall (only done 7,000 ks). My 2H cruiser with after market Turbo gets a average of 15 ltrs to 100 with or without a load, so thats savage fuel consumption by any means. Thanks

on the 120scool list at www.lcool.org the average for the V6 on there seems to be 13-16lt per 100km, with some people getting 12.5 lt per 100km hwy and 13.5 around town [auto grande], up to 18lt per 100km towing all day every day [v6 auto].
The 3.0 diesels are averaging 11.5 -15lt per 100km, up to 18lt per 100km towing.
Recent Simpson trip, had 2 x 3.0 tdi 120's and 1 v6 petrol, and my 90 series 3.0 tdi, and I used 116lt of fuel, the 3.0 tdi 120 manual used 120 lt, the 120 auto 3.0 tdi with dtronic used 126lt and the V6 prado used 128 lt all for the same trip.
With 180 lt standard, and 180kw, I dont think anyone who did the sums, given the V6 is serviced half as often, could make the slower diesel worth owning in comparison, given at 15lt per 100km, you have a 1200km range, or 1400km range at 13lt per 100km.

these are very impressive figures for a v6 and you are right with your last paragraph,it is hard to justify owning a diesel.

Hi Chris,
My 120 Turbo-Diesel is getting an average of 12.1 l/100km and it does not seem to vary between city and country. It only has 9,000kms on the clock so I expect this to improve a bit once it gets to 40,000 or so.
In the 8 times that I have filled it the best has been 11.86 l/100km and the worst has been 12.85 l/100km. Usually travelling 1 up with only
camping gear. No towing.
Cheers

Chris
After 18,000 K I am averaging 12.3 L to 100k in an auto Grande. This includes a mixture of round town & long trips mainly on the blacktop. Hope this helps

Well that sure doesnt sound like progress to me for the 3L diesels.
All that electronic gizmos to break & almost petrol thirst.
Maybe Tojo should take a long hard look at the Euro diesels & their high efficiency & low consumption & extended service intervals.
Nissan 3ld owners report far better figures.

Hi Chris,
I tried to post this earlier, but I think I stuffed up. Hopefully you will not get it twice.
I have a GXL 4.0L Manual.
My average consumption over 24,000km has been 12.92 Lts/100km.
The Prado is a daily driver to and from work, with a combination of city, hills and freeway driving. (
Adelaide hills)
One thing to consider, I always run Premium ULP. I have found that with the computer controlled engines you will generally get better figures. This was also the case with my previous car (Holden VU SS Ute).
My worst
tank has been about 15 Lts/100km and the best about 11 Lts/100km.
The
tank where we ran at 15 Lts/100km, included a 40km rough section of track that took 4.5 hrs to negotiate, and a 650km road run at 110km/hr+. Prior to this run I had to refill half the
tank with Std ULP (hard to say how much difference this would make from using PULP). This same trip, but only a road section at 110km/hr+, returned 13.5Lts/100km. The car was fully loaded, three guys, and also had a spare wheel mounted on roof racks - not very aerodynamic.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Tony

Thanks for your follow up. After looking at all the figures, I think I will stick with the L/Cruiser for the time being. The last trip (over 1000 k) towing a very heavy ex -Telecom trailer with truck
wheels filled to the brim with 180 lts fuel, 15 cases grog and a heap of gear I returned 15 ltrs hundred sitting on 110 and a bit more at times. The truck had 3 people (one was equal to 2) and also was full to the roof. The weight of the trailer at times even made the Cruiser move around. May have a look at the new Prado due out with the 5 speed auto, but I believe it will only be available in the petrol. Thanks again.
