Hello all. I own a 1994 80 series 4.5L petrol maual with about 200,000 on the clock.
Was out and about on the Crooked River Road near
Dargo on weekend and heading a short steep pinch when loud rattlig noise started in gearbox.
Didn't matter if H or L range - managed to get home again about 90kms.
Noise sounds like a bearing rattling but is most pronounced in 1st/2nd gears, disappears when clutch fully pressed and gearbox stops turning.
Anyone had similar experience or might be able to shed some light on problem.

Hi Cruezr
Does it rattle in all gears? For example, 4th gear doesn't load the layshaft, so if it's a layshaft bearing, 4th gear will be quiet (I think). Haven't had a problem with
mine yet (touch wood).
Sounds expensive, but I hope you find a cheap cause.
BTW, drain the gearbox oil and check for metal pieces - that might indicate a collapsed bearing.
Cheers
John

Gearbox problems was chipped main cog on output shaft (3-4mm deep chunks) plus chipping and stripping to input shaft. Bearings appeared to be OK as did all main gears. But I am still not sure what actually caused the problem in the first place.
Including a replacement clutch (about 1mm left on rivets) and a new bearing kit (necessary anyway), total cost to repair was $2600 for parts and $1000 for labour).
I had two mechanics do the work and each said Toyota gearboxes are prone to some sort of failure during their life (one suggested it was related more to the badge). Apparently Patrol gearboxes are less prone to problems, but when they do go, it generally is big-time and very expensive to fix (probably also explains why a Patrol gearbox is about half as heavy again as a Landcruiser gearbox).
