I have recently had the misfortune to stake a 265/75 x 16 BFG A/T Tyre
When I wen't to a tyre shop that would normaly carry between 20 & 40 such tyres I was informed that these tyres where not in stock & that the supplier would not have any more until November.
I was lucky after a few Phone call I managed to find 1 ?? but the main reason for my post is to make people that have this sized tyre [Plus the size that fits the Prado] aware they may have trouble obtaining a new one

Johno,

I heard that there was a shortage as they had changed the country of manufacture again.

We just recently bought new BFG M/T, most places we tried, same deal big delays, but there is one shop here that has heaps, I think it's because they fit tyres to the government vehicles.

When I bought my BFG 225/75 16 KO (5 tyres). I had to wait 6 weeks. That was 2 1/2 years ago mind you. I was told it was because they were so popular. As soon as they hit they shelves they were sold. I originally thought SURE. Athough a few different stores told me a similar story.

Must be a NSW problem.
No hassles here in Vic straight of the shelf at ARB Northern here in Melb.
Also quoted by another company as available the next day.

Found out similar things when I was lookin at 245x75 GO2' Yokos for pathy...

None available, but local bloke had 5 in stock... But when I went back, only had 3 in stock, and couldnt get me 2 more.

Eric also tried but suppliers had none, and had no planned date on supply...

Brings up a good point to add to research when buying tires - are they available if you do blow a sandshoe...

Sorry forgot to mention that the guy we bought the tyres from said that the reason for the delay and shortage in stock was due to the moulds used for producing the tyres being broken.

I have heard that one a number of times.

But how many moulds can a company like BFG break in one go?

I was wondering the same thing, to produce the quantity of tyres they they need you would think that they would have quite a few moulds!!!

Just thought I'd pass on what I was told.

Old Johno,

I am having the same problem. I am after a set of 265/75/16 BFG muddies and have been told October at the earliest by 3 tyre retailers.

Hi All,

I have a bunch of different stories given by many retailers as to the reasons why BFG's in certain sizes are not available......broken moulds, change country, different blends......

The reason is we in Australia are a very small market and get what we are given and with Michellin buying the brand they are only to eager to shift people onto there branded tyres when supply stocks get low.

The BFG's are a very solid tyre and are sought after by many of us including me and I think they bring in what are the most fiited versions and keep reasonable stock but its the sizes like 265/75 r16 that cop the low stock levels. I have never had any problems sourcing and striking a good deal on 285/75 R16 tyres.

My tip is to go with the red letter dealers as these are the BFG experts.

Stuart.

BFG's used to be a solid tire, but not so much since they changed to the KM/KO range. SIdewalls are softer, and they dont last as long as others..

Then you get the story, if you can get the USA made ones they are better than the Jap made ones..

Who knows, but when dishing out over $1200 on new tires, I'd rather go with something I know will last.

YMMV

There is so much rumour and inuendo floating around about BFG's over the last few years its hard to know whats real and what isn't.

My experince has been excellent when running these tyres and have had sensational mileage and reliability....but then again thats my experience. Tyres will always be a hot topic of conversation in the 4x4 community and sometimes more so than the V8 Supercars and there tyres as we traverse a far greater range of terrain in all types of conditions.

Talking about conditions....I was driving on snow covered roads two weeks ago and it was interesting to watch my Brother in Laws vehicle in front of me and the way the BFG ATs clear the snow from the tread so readily.

So I say it comes down to personal choice and personal experience with some polling of other peoples views thrown in to make that choice in which tyre to go for.

By the by I have also had it confirmed from BFG boys earlier this year that the AT tyres are made exactly the same all of over the world....the same mould, process and chemical makeup. So unless someone else can show tests that prove other wise this would just be another one of those rumours about BFG's spread by god knows who!!!!

They are supposed to have the same compound etc, but they don't.

Local Tirepower bloke is a 4wder himself, and when gettin hoops for wifes pathy, he mentioned the different countries, and which is better than the other, same has been mentioned on numerous forums, and same with the success of one over the other - maybe its just luck that one has much better rep and proven ability than the other?

Have seen many in our club as you state with varying levels of success with them. But that could be said with all tires, one bloke had a nightmare run with Coopers, 5 flats in a weekend up high country, with 2 at once (one on car one on trailer)! But everyone when ordering are specifically asking for one over the other, maybe its also a feelgood thing.

It is marked on the tires where they are made.

YMMV

I think you will find that it will boil down to someones experience with a percieved country designated tyre as opposed to a different process or compound during manufacture.

As you have quite rightly pointed out everyone will rave about bad experineces with tyres and look to blame the tyre itself as opposed to how that tyre was used in the first place or what it was used for, but having said that I am still sure that there will always be one eyed supporters of every tyre brand who will continue to carry on rumours that serve no other purpose than confuse everyone.

To my way of thinking it comes down to what tyre is fit for your purpose and what cost you are prepared to pay and what features you prefer. Its like the Toyo/Nissan war and it will always be there.

Just a word of warning when you fit new BFG's to your split rimmed Troopie, make sure the tyre fitter removes the "quality control" stickers from the inside of the tyres. Abrasion and loss of tyre of tyre pressure will occur otherwise....
BFG are aware of the problem, but leave the stickers in anyway....

Hi, I have just worn out a set of 265/70 R16 BFG At travelling on business around Qld in a 94 Turbo LCruiser, Sand, dirt, fast and towing 3 tonne trailers I can not fault the result 120,000klms and now one has gone totally out of shape, well they are worn out.
I have thought about going to a more road tyre for better steering and comfort as I have bigger springs, which ride a little tough. Advice I have been given is that the different tyres will not change ride comfort a lot. And styeering is really poor maintenance I gues I only did one rotation in 2 years.
Not one puncture, so I am very dubious about going away from this tyre it has pewrformed very well.

PROBLEM GETTING TYRES: I cannot find a supplier in Brisbane who has some, ie 275/70 R16 , I found one co who could get them $300 each, I will change brands before I pay that, as a matter of principle. I dont like been taken advantage of.
Can anyone tell me where I can get a set pronto or is there a considered as good option.
Regards
Mark.
