Rossco,
I swear by the 4.2 but freely admit that a test drive round the 'burbs will have you falling in love with the 3Lt. If that is what you want (a good town-type car) then you will order the 3Lt. The 4.2 is a chugga and will lug all day long; Nissan even said so in their sales blurb at the time I bought mine.
It's horses for courses. If I'd wanted a race horse 4x4 i'd have bought a jeep or something equally silly.
Be interested in what you think and what you end up with.

I have had both 3l and 4.2. If outright reiability is not an issue, then get the 3 litre.

The 3 litres tows better.
The 3 litres goes better.
The 3 litre is nicer to drive.
The 3 litre will go anywhere a 4.2 will go.
The 3 litres uses heaps less fuel.
The 3 litre manual has optimal gearing (4.2 wagon is overgeared).
The 3 litre can overtake easily at highway speeds (the 4.2 cant).
The 3 litre is being used by hire companies, government bodies, cockies, NDC in all the remote locations of australia.
The 3 litre can run all day at 150 without overheating.
The 3 litre has a radiator that is protected from sticks when off road.
Longeivity of EGR'd 4.2's is not proven yet.

If you think a 3 litre needs a ditronic, then the 4.2 by comparison will need a complete new turbo and pipe system., and disabling of the EGR system as well.

Just my experience from owning both.

Sean

you forgot to add
The 3 Litre Blows up...
The 3 Litre isnt proven to last

the 4.2 will do 500,000 standing on its nose.

YMMV

Truckster

Dont confuse the latest 4.2 EGR motor with the earlier 4.2's.

I do a quite of bit of spot lighting fox's ranging from local Geelong area to Nyngan in NSW. And with the possiblilty of the old man paying out the total at the end of the lease thus he will own it. I will most likely go for the 4.2 TD due to the ease of maintenance and they are a known thing. A friend of mine down in the Otways who is a deisel mechanic says go for the 4.2 as well.
