I have a 1996 2.8TD Patrol with Bridgestone Duellers 235/80R16 Tyres. The First set wore out in 65k. Now the second set is gone in 45k. These tyres are not common and expensive. Has anyone replaced their tyres on their 1996 2.8TD with more common and cheaper tyres such as 235/85 R16 and got better mileage than the above. Being 23mm taller than the standard, have they affected the engine pulling power or the gearbox when towing a small caravan?

Thanks for any info before I buy a new set.

Bridgestones are known for wearing out real fast. Wifes pathy killed teh OME set in 50-60k klms.

Look at anything else!
Pro-comp run some good tires these says with good kms
Coopers AT/ST
Goodyr AT
pirelli scorpions
Dunlop AT

The 2.8 as you know is no rocketship, but should handle the slightly higher profile. Some people are running 285's on 2.8 GQ's.

YMMV.

So whats wrong with replacing tyres after 50-60k klms. It gives me a good excuse to try something else. If tyres lasted 100k Id have to wait 3yrs to change them!

Dzivod,

I have the same truck and got 98 k out of 5 x yokohama Super Diggers SD, I now have Bridgestone Dueller AT 693 31 x 10.5 x 15 Aussie made and am very happy with them. I have done 30 k on them (Only four) and have not had a problem, this 30 k includes Simpson desert, up around corner country and around melb and a bit of stuff in High Country. I have had one flat when the valve stem split. They were about $165 each which was about $55 each less than BFG AT in the same size. I think I will get about 70-80 k on them at this rate. When I got the tyres I was going to get 33's but was advised against it because the truck is gutless enough down low, most of the time it is not off road so advised to leave it until the Chev diesel conversion when SWSBO agrees and the faithfull 2.8 departs this world.

Red.
