Looking at buying a 1989 3.0 v6 petrol pajero. My 84' diesel Patrol blew the motor at 340,000 so now I am looking for another 4x4. This pajero I have found is in terrible condition inside, but the motor and clutch seem to be going strong. 245,000 on the clock. The price is 4999.00. The dealer is giving 6 months rego and 12 months warrenty on the motor, clutch, and gear box. I have always heard that the pajero isn't as strong as the patrol, but I guess it is like anything, everyone has their own opinion. Just wondering what you guys think. By the way, just found this site and have been doing a bit of looking around. Thanks for the discussions

Nothing major wrong with the PJ's.
I have a 1990 NG V6.
Does it have records of Service ?
Timing belts need to be done at 100,000. Bugger of a job . . . make sure they have been done.
Does it blow any smoke ? Its common knowledge that the V6 needs a bit of a freshin up around the 250, 000 mark.
Make sure the oil hasn't been treated to reduce smoke , to hide something.
the V6's get along best with a few revs on board , between 2800 , and 3000. Can take its toll.
Generally speaking though , they are a pretty good 4wd. Decent tyres , decent
suspension , and decent driving , they will go the majority of
places , other , bigger 4wds will go.

no, there are no service records in the box. There is no smoke either.. any way one can check if the oil has been treated???
I just wonder if the engine has been tuned up or if it was traded in because the owners knew it was coming. Thanks for the input.

You could get the oil tested professionally , not sure who does it though . . .
I would get a proper inspection done by a good 4wd workshop. I would think they would have a fair idea of all the tricks , and doing a compression test etc , would show up any weak spots , that "may" require either , thick oil , or treated oil.

Have had 3 pajeros and very pleased with them but would tread caustiosly with a vehicle that has not been looked after inside.Have purchased cars at auctions and that is how we judge the vehicles the exterior and interior my opinion is a car that looks like sh,, has been treated like sh.. Try and get some oil analysis done
