I'm looking for a new set of tyres for my 2.8D Hilux. Can anyone suggest a fairly aggressive A/T. I don't think I can justify Muddies.

Most A/T aren't what you could call 'aggressive', they are just that, all terraine tyres. I'm logging off shortly, but I will assume all will be wanting to know what sort of work you do in a percentage format ie. 80% tar 10% mud 10% sand.

Leave it to ya. Plenty of experts on this subject.

cheers

Chris.

Yeah, Sorry probably should be a little more specific.

Realistically abot 60% tar, 40% mud. However I am planning to do a little bit of beach work!

Cheers,
Glenn

Cooper STT's and Goodyear MTR's are both more of an agressive AT , then a full on Muddy

ST's are fantastic.
I use 'em for EVERYTHING.

I'll keep buying them until they stop making them.

How's that ?

Josh.

Gotta agree with Josh, the Cooper ST's are great.

I too was looking for something better off-road than my previous BFG T/A's, but could not justify mudders as I still do too much road work :( I find the ST's a good compromise betweend a mudder and a typical A/T type tyre.

Cheers

The way Cooper ST's wear, never again! 4.5mm tread wear in 13,000km's mainly on bitumen. I look like gettin under 40,000km's out of them.

Hi Shaker,

Hmm... I rotate my tyres every 5,000km and record the tread wear. I am averaging only 0.5mm per 5,000km. I also find the front left wears the fastest (~0.8mm per 5,000km) and the rear position evens out the front edge wear.

What tyre pressures do you run? My wear is based on 32psi front and 35psi rear normally, but 35 psi front and 40 psi rear when towing my van.

Cheers

Captain

Yep put me in the happy ST brigade too.

I got over 85,000 k's out of my 265/75/r16's, they still had about 15000 k's more but i wanted to upsize to the 285's.

P.S. Hey Josh nice to meet you today at Stanwell Tops.
That Exploroz sticker on the rear of the truck worked well eh?

Ive just clocked up 30K with my ST's in the 'Lux and they have at least 60% of their tread left. 15K of the mileage was gravel roads, and they get rotated every 10K.

I run 34psi in the back, 32 in the front (un laden) and they have worn evenly. I could not be happier. Even better than the Cooper AT's I had before.

Cheers,

Glenn.

I have the tyres balanced, rotated & the alignment checked every 5000km. Pressures are 35psi all round for highway use.
Friend has a 2004 Navara Dual Cab 4x4, Cooper ST's, done 14,000 & lost 5mm of tread depth. He is about as happy as I am.

Extract from the Cooper distributors email reply to my complaint:

"I can see how you may be concerned about the wear on your Cooper S/T tyres. Please keep in mind that tyres have a tendency to wear a little quicker in the first stage of there life due to tread flexibility and compound variation."

Now, as a layman, I would have thought as the diameter decreased, rotaion speed would increase, raising both temperature & wear rate!

Shaker, most tyres wear more quickly when new and the wear rate slows down. It is, in part, do to the flexibilty of the tread blocks when new - they scrub more. As they wear down, they become firmer and and don'y flex so much.

At most, the wear increases rotational speed (rpk) by a little over 1%.

I'm also an ST fan and have done 25,000 km on mine now. Wear rate indicates I'll get between 60k and 70k kilometres from them.

The ST and Goodyear MT/R both sit somewhere between the classic AT and MT tread patterns. Both have solid reps, despite some "bagging" of both. I'm told by an "expert" that sells both, the ST will wear a bit better than the MT/R.

Grlynch I had Cooper ST tyres on did the usuall ripped the lugs off , common problem with them.Coopers changed them for STT tyres lots better off road but on road you cant hear the radio and they slide all over the road when wet. I have just fitted some Kelly MSR tyres which are good so far ,quite and have good grip on wet or dry road also a deep open tread for off road.

It's interesting how different users can have totally different experiences with the same tyres.
I agree with you desray with respect to the lugs being ripped off the STs. So I too went to STTs. I find the STTs to be great offroad as well as on bitumen. I don't find the road noise at all intrusive (there's more noise from the wind than from the tyres with the window down). The only time the noise is noticeable is when driving at speed beside a solid wall with windows down. With the windows up I don't notice the noise. Also I have found them quite good in the rain on bitumen. I did have a set of STTs a few years back and they lasted for about 50,000 kms before begining to well unevenly (despite rotation etc) and they finally died around the 70,000 km mark.

Sts are spec'd as a "mud" tread pattern and are not designed for rock-climbing. Most folk that have lug problems with them have damaged the tyres on rocks.

I do more "rock climbing" than mud driving but haven't had a single lug damaged. Maybe I'm lucky or maybe I found just the right tyre pressures to run them at. Either way, I'm happy :)
