Took the Toorak Tractor out in to the Flinders during the week on some easy and some moderately rough tracks. Couldn't do anything too serious as SWMBO came along. Lst weekend was a three day event.
Day 1 Build storage compartment for rear of truck
Day 2 Fitted winch to alloy bullbar(Yes Truckster, I thought it was steel until I drilled the first hole)
Day 3 Tried to figure out where to put the auxilliary battery but gave up in the end............Any ideas anyone?..........Fitted UHF and HF.......Crawled under the truck.....Not even a wet patch on the swivel hubs. Took all my strength and an extension bar to break the seal on the filler plug on the front diff. Oil was in pristine condition. My guess is the truck has never been in 4wd!

Scratched the paintwork..aaahhhhhhhhrrgggg...........that is the trouble with pretty 4wd's. On the upside the ruck runs extremely well and does not blow smoke. Got 14/100 towing a trailer for 600km and some bush driving including low range and some high range work.

Going to the Big Smoke tomorrow to have a roofrack fitted..........NOT my preferred option but I need to carry those jerries somewhere..hahahaha

Overall I amimpressed with the GQ2 and it has GOOD soundsystem especially with the blues turned UP!!!!!!

Willem,
Front N/S wing is where the battery went in my Diesel GQ, my mate had his put at the back of the engine bay and it was a tad smaller than the standard NZ70

Hi Martyn

I take it you mean left side wing. Trouble is the radiator expansion chamber is fitted against the wheel arch where the battery can go. One could remove it I suppose?

Hi Willem, mine is the same as u describe your mates is. I could easily fit the NZ70 there, but because mine in petrol/lpg, the hoses from the convertor restrict me to a smaller battery. Looks like the only spot to fit one IMHO.

Willem,
Yeap Near Side, the bracket I got mounted alongside the expansion tank, it put the battery quite close to the exhaust, I fitted a thermal barrier to be on the safe side, there wasn't one fitted originally but the battery got quite warm after a long (ish) trip. The petrol set up maybe a tad differentrto the diesel I'm not sure. Every time I needed to work on the alternator I had much easier access from inside the N/S (left hand side) wheel arch. You should check out the flaps inside the wheel arches you will be amazed at how much easier a lot of the jobs are.

Hi willem,
The battery tray goes infront of the plastic overflow bottle mate. U loosen off the bolts on the guard and it slides in under the N/S/F guard. The plastic bottle stays where it is. I run a Denco turbo on mine mate and battery sits pretty close to it but i have not had any problems at all. I time though, if u do corregation driving over a long distance, keep checking around the base of the battery bracket as vibrations can cause small cracks to ur inner guard.
Cheers Angelo

THanks Angelo. I also spoke to a fitter of 4wd batteries today and that is where it has to go. I have my own battery cradle but will have to modify it a bit.

Go the Blues!!!!
Got a Howlin' Wolf tape running myself at the moment and currently discovering Jimmy Rogers who used to play guitar in Muddy Waters band. His only album has Little Walter and Big Walter Horton on harp. Great campfire and travelling sound.

Camper, Willem, and other fellow Blues addicts - if you have broadband, try "Blues on Air" (URL escapes me at the moment, but can supply on request). Good quality non-stop, no-talking, blues... Listen to it all the time when on the pooter.

Yeah Mungo,
"Blues on the Big Road' is a great site too with blues forums and good info.
Don't have broadband I'm afraid. Get in enough trouble with the little Mac now.
Experienced playing blues around the campfire over Easter. Probably close to the most fun you can have standing up.

Willem,

Well now you have scratch no.1 on it the rest won't hurt as much! What did you do to reinforce the bull bar to take the winch? I new a guy with a cruiser who thought the alloy would be strong enough until he got bogged to the axle. Alloy is interesting the way it will transform into a bulging shape when under load.

Still reckon you are mad not going for a long range tank instead of the jerries.

Anyway enjoy the new wheels

Davo................madness runs rampant in my family. No, the winch will be steel mounted this weekend. I stuck it there in a hurry as I had an idea............but that idea has dissipated. I do lots of thinking and experimenting and manufacturing of configurations which work sometimes...............some are just a waste of money and energy but we need R&D and every now and then I hit on something that works!!!

Have had 2 long range tanks over the past 30 odd years of 4wd-ing and both had venting problems. Hey, I have a heap of jerries and can carry any number if I want to. So thats the way its gonna be.

You'll be whingeing about the scratches on the INSIDE of the Nissan from the jerries and the smell of the petrol taking away from the fragrance of the new vehicle and it will be uncomfortable sleeping on top of the jerries. LOL. LOL. Huh?

Willem,

My old GQ had the aux battery fitted directly on top of the left hand shockie, the overflow res for the radiator was repositioned right behind the head light. Mine also had aftermarket turbo which was really a bit ugly but worked well. Tis was close to the battery and forced me to keep any eye on the fluid level as it would evaporate away

Got picks of the storage system?? I'd be interested to see how it compares to the one I built for the GQ.

Happy travelling

Hi Duncs

The storage cupboard in the back is most amateurish but I will take a pic on Friday(if I remember) and email it to you. Some refinements have to be made. Of course the GQ has loads more space that the G60. I am also going to make a bed inside the truck as well.

Congratulations on the first scratch - i bet that nissan is really smiling after it's first real adventure - with it's "hero mark" to prove it.

I wouldnt be standing infront of that bar if you were Winching, specially if the winch only mounts to the bar, not the chassis..

Second battery sits around the Radiator overflow bottle. You buy an ARB/Piranha bracket, it uses the same bolt holes as the overflow.. You will see a couple of nuts welded to the inner guard on the passengers side, thats where the base of batterytray mounts ;) Photos at home.

Again, go with a Long range tank, 150ltrs you wont need a big roofrack, maybe only a 1/4 one. You will also lose about 150% of power with the parachute on the roof!

Yer......the winch.......Martin Luther King once said "I have a dream!!!"

Me...I said..."I have an idea!!!! But it was only an idea. The winch will be steel mounted on to the chassis behind the bar sometime this weekend. I had thought of strengthening in and around the present configuration but it is too much work and effort.

Sorry to disappoint you about the LR Tank. I fitted a a parachute today. It is not the ideal answer but I have to find a place to carry and extra tyre casing or two and a number of jerries can go up there for short distances. Thats the way the cookie crumbles...............
