Hi all, can anyone advise me on how noisy the MTR and Cooper ST's are on the bitumen in comparison to the Cooper AT's?
Got Cooper 285/75/16's AT's on the GU at the moment and will need to replace them soon. Prefer to go more chunky but don't want noise. MTR's and ST's seem to be tyre of choice from what I've read.
Also, anyone got 305's on their GU? How do you find them?

I do not know about Cooper AT to ST comparison but I alternate between Goodyear Wranglers and Cooper ST's. The ST's are noisy and lumpier but when it comes to sand and mud they are good and consequently I put up with the noise. The Coopers also appear very strong on the side walls and tread which is important to combat punctures and damage. However unless I am going off road I put the Wranglers on. The Wranglers however are getting to the end of their life and I am considering changing them for Cooper AT's. I spoke to one owner of a Discovery with Cooper ST's and he was very disapointed with wear. He had done 25,000 kms and they were half worn. Mind you he was very heavy compared to my Frontera (we compared indents in soft soil and his were much deeper than
mine) and he tows a camper trailer.
Anyway noise is a fact of life with any chunky tread. You will get it and notice it. The best idea is to have two sets of tyres. A set of spare rims are too expensive for me ($3000) so I just get the tyres changed over when required.

No they arnt to bad really.
All the best

Have 16 inch mtr on gu patrol, silent when new but the older they get the noisier they become
mine have around 50000k can hear them easily now,not as bad as bfg muddies but you can hear them all the same, great in every other respect.

MTRs get noisey as hell when they wear.. but then all MT's do that. BFG, Coopers etc...
IF you dont want noise, go with the AT's.

Yeah, I've got BFG MT's on my HJ75 and the combo of tyres, chev and seating position can get extremely boring on longer haul stuff. Thought the others tyres may have a clever design but I guess "you
canna change the laws of physics Jim"
Re: the AT's, what are the common graden variety BFG AT's like noise wise? Seen them shed whole blocks of tread when doing hot rock work, but those days may be in the past for me. Seem to be a big variation of opinions on them so I'd discounted them to date. May have to do re-think.

I've got BFG AT's on both my Trucks . . .
Noise wise , varies between them. Hardly hear them at all in the Patrol . . . Can hear them easily in the older Pajero.
Just down to sound insulation I guess.
I've always had BFG's and had No problems with them at all.
I'm no rockhopper though . . .

I can barely hear my 225 section BFG KO tyres in my no sound deadening 1997 Rodeo. However my 31x10.5 Wrangler A/T tyres have a real loud hum to them. Don't know if it is they're width or design that makes them noisier but they are fairly worn. When the 31s are worn I'll replace them with MT/Rs.

Get the tyre that does the job you want it to. If it's a little noiser than the next tyre that could be the trade off for the safety or performance you want. Remember they are all equally noisy on the gravel.
I have the great MTR's, if the noise is more than I care to listen to I wind up the windows - but I love it with the windows down and the smell of the fresh air on my face ( must've been a dog in another life) LOL

I'd agree .. You suffer a bit of noise, you have radios and stuff, dont worry about it, you wont notice it most of the time

Hi, I had Dunlop Suretrac street tyres, quiet as a church mouse. Two weeks ago I fitted Copper S/T (LT version) and was a bit worried about noise. They are fine, a slight whine around town at a cruise ie just idling along but otherwise no problems. I thought about STTs but decided they were too agressive for use on the road and probably wouldn't be as safe in adverse highway conditions, rain, ice etc. The S/Ts handle really
well and are good in the wet oily city road conditions.
