My 2000 prado is suffereing probably 5 or 6 cms oF brake pedaL travel before they bite.
I get a hissing sound from the pedal area while the travel occurs. Once they bite they are fine but a drive in a friends prado shows his does not have same problem.
Pads are fine, probaly 70% front and similar rear.
I have just had the brake fluid replaced and bled.
The car has only done 70,000 ks.

Teejae,
Could be a brake booster problem.
Does the pedal feel soft, spongy or hard?
Is the pedal travelling further than it used to before the brakes bite?

The hissing sound would indicate a brake booster/master cylinder problem.
Is it intermittent or is it every time you use the brakes?

Could be the vacum pump or a leak in the pressure system.

I think they must have let some air in and not bled it out. I'm guessing a rebleed may fix it.
I'm assuming you don't have ABS, as this is a different ballgame.
