Has anyone had this problem?
When I start my Patrol ( cold start ) I have a noise which sounds like a loose tappet
this noise disappears when engine warms up.
I have adjusted the tappets to manufactures specs when the engine is cold, noise is still there on start up.
My patrol has done 211.000km's and runs fine,is it possible that a tappet or cam follower is worn, has anyone else experienced this noise.
All replies and advice appreciated.
Regards
Peter.

Peter,
Tappets is one job I don't feel confident to tackle....but I seem to recall reading that they are supposed to be adjusted when the engine is hot.....so that may be the cause of the problem...
Good luck
BTW: all the 4.2's rattle when cold AFAIK.

What brand of oil filters are you using?
There are some that have no drain back valve in them, which holds oil in the filter when you shut it down. You should use either Nissan ones ($12.00) or Fleetguard ones.. both have drainback valves.

Tried Valvoline.
Oil pressure takes twice to three times as long to come up after cold start.
Back to Ryco, problem fixed.

Gday Peter,
Had a gQ TD42 with Schwietzer turbo running 12psi for 3 years. I noticed at cold startup the clacking and the tapping for about 10 seconds before oil pressure rose. Spoke to my turbo guy first then Nissan. That's the sounds of a TD42 motor run in, apparently no damage caused, only if you start then drive off straight away with giving a chance to lube up. I always leave my trucks for about a minute before driving and 5 minutes whilst driving before reving up to 2 1/2 thou rmp and above.
Cheers mate,
Chris.

My surf tends to do this on very cold mornings (very cold in
perth is only about 3 degrees C) LOL
It's only for a second as it starts to kick over, I have put it down to either pre ignition because of the EFI giving it some kind of choke or the oil being a 15w-40 not really designed for the colder weather and perhaps being a little thick on startup.
Not really bothered about it to be perfectly honest.
