If you're looking at the V6 be very careful to ensure the head is not cracked, or that the head gasket is not leaking.
Very good vehicles other than that problem. It was a factory problem with that vintage of the vehicle and they did a recall I belive, but it's always possible a few missed out.
I would be guessing that by now most of them would have either failed and been repaired or are going to be fine, but it's woth paying some extra attention in that area anyway.
Also if you do a lot of 4wding you will probally do what I'm going to do on the weekend and remove the rear sway bar as the brackets just constantly brake while under extreme articulation.
They are only $16 a bracket but it's a pain in the arse, I've gone through 3 this year!

Hi there. I used to have a 4runner SR5 90 model. It was a 2.4 petrol so was gutless, BUT, a GREAT TRUCK. It depends what you wanna do with it, but a pathfinder compared to the 4runner is a softroader. The 4runner is a good offroad truck. It aint a cruiser, but it certainly aint a softroader. Awesome on the sand, and good for general offroad. Steer away from the 2.4 and get the whole thing inspected. You should be fine. It's a yota after all.

LOL, Pathfinder is a softroader compared to a Forerunner. Bold statement. Have you ever been in a Pathy offroad??

Anyway, if you want any info an Pathys just drop into the Pathfinders' Club forum for a chat sometime.

Gotta agree with the other guys, got one and love it.Mine is a 2.8 Diesel, didnt buy it wanting heaps of power so no probs there. No electrics to fail and strand you out woop woop, built on a Hilux chasis so nice and strong, typical Toyota build quality and plenty of aftermarket parts ava. to trick it up.
As already stated watch out for the V6 that head gasket problems, there should be a recall notice(sticker) on the firewall to state its been done(I think).

Sponge, when you say 90% travel, I assume you mean the usual - 90% of the time on sealed roads getting to where you actually want to be.

In that case, the Pathfinder wins hands-down.

The Pathy is a much more refined vehicle whilst still being excellent off-road. However, they are not designed for extreme off-road work and are more difficult to modify than the 4-Runner.

Oh, I almost forgot. If you are looking to go bush bashing, get the Toyota please. Pathy owners don't bash the bush, we'd rather enjoy it undamaged :)
